DevOps Engineer, iOS Mobile Developer Experience

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.
Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.
There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.
The iOS Mobile Developer Experience team provides reliable Mac compute infrastructure and related services to support continuous integration (CI) for Square’s iOS applications. Providing reliable compute infrastructure covers a broad set of responsibilities including: estimating capacity requirements, coordinating contractors to set up physical machines, installing the latest OS and software, building integration with other Square systems, gathering performance metrics to drive system improvements, and developing disaster recovery (DR) strategies. iOS MDX is also responsible for evaluating and developing MacOS virtualization strategies to support increased scale while keeping costs under control.
You will use your DevOps skills as part of a small, focused, but critical team responsible for keeping hundreds of Mac minis and Mac Pros running the latest operating systems, compilers, and related tools; as well as Linux-based Jenkins servers which schedule CI jobs onto those Macs. You will work closely with the iOS engineers on the team, who have in-depth knowledge of the iOS build pipeline and tools, to understand requirements and support CI infrastructure development efforts.
- Own (as part of a team) the configuration code; work closely with internal customers to identify requirements and make the necessary changes to configuration code including tests; manage deployment of changes.
Maintain system uptime for an internal Jenkins instance and supporting Linux-hosted services.
Gather and analyze system metrics to identify and address problematic machines.
Coordinate with our site operations team for occasional maintenance of on-premises hardware in our datacenter.
Coordinate with other platform teams as part of cross-functional projects and migrations: network engineering, security, IT, other CI teams.
Partner with vendors and engineering teams for a cloud-hosted Mac CI architecture initiative.
Monitor and improve DevOps tools and processes, automate mundane tasks, and improve system reliability by implementing self-healing.
Follow Apple’s macOS and Xcode releases in planning and executing testing and rollouts of new versions. Keep CI toolchain up to date and resolve problems as they arise.
Communicate technical designs in writing and in person to multiple technical audiences.
Participate in the team on-call rotation for issues with CI systems stability.
Work with world-class, experienced, and dedicated engineers.
Passion about continuous integration and accelerating development velocity through systems optimization and architecture design
DevOps knowledge including configuration management tools (e.g. Ansible, Chef, Puppet, etc.), and knowledge of MacOS.
Experience deploying changes to production environments
Ability to work independently to deliver on a schedule without sacrificing quality.
Comfort with a higher-level interpreted language such as Ruby or Python, or compiled such as Go/Rust, and Bash.
Network and security generalist experience: familiarity with DNS, TCP/IP, tcpdump/Wireshark, firewalls, SSH, TLS and certificates.
A strong desire to continue learning; eagerness to share your ideas, and openness to those of others. Quickly and easily articulate issues and what needs to be done to resolve them.
Knowledge of iOS build toolchain is a plus.
