Job Description

Client Platform Engineering architects, develops, and operates a mission critical platform used by all Blocks: the employee laptops. Following current best practices, CPE operates this platform using an infrastructure as code approach, often in innovative ways. We are dedicated to a CI/CD workflow where all changes are tested, promoted, and deployed through automated processes to ensure reliability, and security while minimizing operational cost. CPE follows a site reliability approach to service ownership, with a focus on instrumenting our services for data-driven decision making and alerting. We support a growing five-figure fleet consisting of macOS, iOS, Windows, Chrome OS, and Linux clients

 

We are looking for an engineer to join our team who either comes from an SRE background and wants to learn about client management, or an experienced client engineer who is looking to take their device automation skills to the next level. We are an agile team who loves to pair program, learn new technologies, and push the boundaries of our field. We contribute to open source, present at conferences, and shape the industry discourse through innovation and experience.

 

As a member of our team, you will:

  • Manage the entire employee device lifecycle while working with partner teams in information security, logistics, and help desk to ensure a seamless environment for Blocks.

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for integrating changes and deploying to production in progressively tested environments.

  • Automate the software patching and deployment process

  • Deliver configurations and maintain state using configuration management tools

  • Instrument services with an aim for automated monitoring and alerting

  • Support data-driven policy by shipping and querying streams of fleet data

Qualifications

You have:

  • Demonstrated excellence in building and owning highly scalable backend services

  • Experience with cloud platforms (we use AWS)

  • Experience with modern infrastructure as code tools (Terraform, Docker, Saltstack, CI/CD)

  • Experience with management/automation tools such as Puppet/SALT.

  • Experience designing and building APIs

  • A desire to be directly responsible for the lifecycle of engineering solutions.  This includes leading the design and implementation of projects and organizing the team to achieve a remarkable solution.

  • A love of automation, abstracting complexities away from customers, and making things that “just work”

  • A strong desire to see your work have direct impact on the business

  • Experience in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, Ruby, Swift.

  • Consistent track record of coordinating or leading small cross-team technical projects.
