Job Description

Afterpays Global Data Engineering and Platforms (GDP) team is responsible for the innovation, design and maintenance of an easy-to-use Data Platform that helps Afterpay on its ongoing journey to become the world’s most loved-way to pay. This is a great opportunity for individuals who are interested in kick starting their careers as a Data Support Engineer. If you are someone who loves to problem solve, think outside the box, and holds a passion for data, you’ll find an awesome community that recognises and appreciates your talents!

As an Early Careers candidate, we understand that you don't know everything and that’s okay! As part of the role, your first few weeks will be spent learning the A-Zs of our awesome tech stack (see below). Once you’re comfortable, we'll have you support us by: 

  • Triaging and providing L1 support for requests received on the support channel. 
  • Reviewing and resolving alerts from production data pipelines. 
  • Investigating data quality issues reported by data consumers.
  • Adding documentation to Confluence for existing and new data processes.
  • Updating the Data Dictionary (Amundsen).
  • Being on-call support on a rotation basis. 

Technologies we use (and teach)

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS), Apache Airflow 
  • SQL, Python, Apache Spark (PySpark)


You'll have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in either Computer Science, Data Science, or IT/Technology or some junior experience in the industry through internships, bootcamps etc. 
  • A curiosity and passion for creative problem solving and a humble mindset willing to spend the time to learn and fundamentally understand things from first principles. 
  • Have completed at least one Individual Project on GitHub (preferable) or a University Capstone project that demonstrates understanding in a high level language is desirable.
