iOS Engineering Manager, UI Systems

  • Full-time

Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

UI Systems is building Square’s universal design system. This new design system will be deployed across all of Square’s seller-facing products on iOS, Android and web, in addition to being used for editorial and content websites. This includes our flagship products Point of Sale, Square Register, and Square Terminal, as well as Square’s public web site at squareup.com. Put simply, this team is building the new public face of Square.

Why are we doing this? As Square grows, ensuring a consistent experience across many products becomes a larger and larger challenge. At Square, we value great and consistent design – UI Systems is here to ensure that Square’s customers and Square engineers alike have a delightful and consistent experience when working with, or working on our products – no matter who built them.

UI Systems is also responsible for the core UI frameworks and tools needed to make building, testing, and maintaining UI easy and fast at scale. We’re supporting over 200 mobile engineers (and growing!). On iOS, our new design system is built with Blueprint, our open source declarative UI framework.

The Role

UI Systems is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the iOS sub-team. In addition to being accountable for the team roadmap and results, a key part of the role will be representing and evangelizing Market adoption. You will need to build an understanding of the current state of mobile development at Square, empathizing with the pain points of our customer teams, and work across platform teams to solve these issues – our team works with others to “get to yes” – we want to be an enabler, not a blocker.

You Will:

  • Work alongside our iOS tech lead to be the iOS engineering face of UI Systems and the Market design system

  • Lead a team of iOS engineers (currently 4 including a tech lead)

  • Stay deeply connected to the technical work of the team to ensure you understand the needs of engineers both on the team and around Square (our customers)

  • Work closely with the other leads on the team – Android, Web, and Design – to plan roadmaps, and to represent the work and progress of the larger team

  • Build a network of leads across Square to stay ahead of potential issues, understand upcoming needs, inform team priorities, and evangelize Market adoption

  • Define, track, and report on metrics and progress to our customers and stakeholders

  • You are leading a small team – you will be writing code! Eg, fixing bugs, delivering small features, etc.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years iOS development experience, deep UIKit experience is a must.

  • 3+ years management experience, preferably on a platform / foundational team.

  • Experience with, and understanding of UI design principles.

  • Experience building cross-functional relationships across design and engineering.

  • Experience leading through influence across teams.

  • We are a process-light team – you must have a strong bias towards action. We use processes to help us, not to constrain us.
