Company Description
Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.
There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.
Job Description
The Square Payments team enables Square to move money. From developing infrastructure to working with external partners, we find the best ways to move money across different networks and countries in a way that is cost-effective, available, scalable, secure, and forward-looking. We're looking for a Payments Program Manager to join the Square Japan team. You will join a team that supports one of Square's most important assets in delivering meaningful and unique value to our Sellers - our strategic operations and industry relationships with payment networks, bank acquirers and card issuers.
Reporting to the Payment Operations Manager in Tokyo, you will help launch new functionality in Japan, adapting our money movement systems to changing industry requirements, and monitoring our systems for accuracy and efficiency. You will become an expert in the specifications and functionality of Japanese payments networks and work with the Japan Industry Relations Manager, and global Product and Engineering teams to ensure payments best practice is converted into code for Square's money movement systems. This role can be based remotely in Japan or in our Tokyo office through a hybrid of in-office and remote working.
You will:
Lead the implementation of payment projects as part of Square's Industry Relations and Operations team
Attend meetings and negotiate with external Japan payments partners, improve Square's system operations, and convert requirements from vendors and partners into operational plans
Use your knowledge of Square’s payment products to turn industry changes and requirements into projects that maximize functionality and compliance and minimize costs
Work with the global and Japan Payments team to translate product functionality into the best set of payment capabilities
Work with our payment industry partners and suppliers on scoping and implementation for new features and systems
Design analysis and monitoring tools to ensure the messages Square sends on to payment networks are maximizing success and minimizing costs
Creatively identify new sources of data and intelligence that can allow Square to route payments optimally
Work with Partnerships, Product, Sales and Account Management, Marketing, and Finance teams to develop Square’s global payments strategy
Manage daily payment operations by promoting standardization and efficiency of processes and supporting contractors
Qualifications
You have:
4+ years of demonstrated experience working in/with Japan card processing and/or payments
Experience and knowledge of Acquiring (such as Visa/Mastercard)
The ability to work with Japan-based customers in Japanese (writing and video meetings), and global Square colleagues in English (reading, writing and video meetings)
Desire to manage the movement of billions of dollars in a small team
Prior experience and the ability to work with industry partners such as acquirers, global card networks, local networks, industry regulators, payment facilitators, or debit networks
Experience working with and establishing streamlined processes around business operations and reporting
Dexterity and appetite to interrogating new payment network rules, contract changes, and working with account managers at bank and network partners
Interest in changing the payments landscape in Japan and globally
Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously in an agile environment
Ability to think hypothetically with speed in an ambiguous environment
Optional:
Experience working with global card brands (such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, China UnionPay)
Detailed knowledge of e-money, QR codes, bank transfer, local networks, other Japan-specific payment methods, and mobile payment methods
Relevant experience with payment hardware and device certification
The ability to examine code, perform SQL analysis, and review payment network rules updates to extract key information
