Job Description

We’re building the next generation of the decentralized web – returning data back to users. Open Source Programs Engineers apply their technical prowess to grow our global community. You’ll be encouraging an environment of collaboration through the tools you build. We want you to bring your experience, expertise, and creativity to bear: welcoming people into an easy-to-use internet economy, giving them control over their data, and bringing a necessary decentralized identity layer to the web. You will work on TBD’s Open Source Programs, and report to TBD’s Head of Open Source.

This is a full-stack generalist role which reflects the fluid nature of our work. You’ll be part of the technical backbone supporting our open source strategy. Open Source Program Engineers create and advance the systems which connect community members to one another and our team. Our developer website, forums, chat server, and documentation initiatives are some of the tools we leverage to execute our open source strategy. We are building the model for joyful, inclusive, and innovative programs throughout the industry.

There are wonderful advancements in decentralized and blockchain technologies right now - and we bring these together to work to solve real pain points for everyday people. If you’re an excellent candidate for this role, you love a grand challenge. You:

  • Seize the opportunity to solve varied problems with your broad technical skills.

  • Think about how we make great experiences before digging into the tech.

  • Bring a “yes, and!” mentality to new projects.

  • Dig in to learn something new when appropriate.

  • Thrive in ambiguity and enjoy self-directed problem solving.

  • Often find yourself suggesting ways to do things better, and want a team encouraging you to do that.

  • Direct your work around a mission we believe will usher a new wave of privacy and data self-ownership for the web.

  • Foster collaborative environments, with a track record of diving into others’ work or prototyping new things on your own to Get Stuff Done around a shared vision.

  • Care about testing and have earned your opinions about when to use unit, integration, and system tests.

Examples of Things You May Be Doing

  • Creating a testable examples and tutorials system

  • Building new sections and features for our Developer Site

  • Evaluating and implementing moderation tools for our Discord chat

  • Defining an evaluation process for external projects to join the TBD ecosystem in our “Incubation” program

  • Identifying community need and proposing things we can build to address it

  • Stand up and maintain a Community Wiki

  • Helping team efficiency by automating our processes

  • Standing up a Replit (or similar) environment for people to try our projects without any installation requirements.

  • Using our open source projects and prototyping better ways for people to get involved.

Qualifications

You:

  • Have delivered front-end projects using some of: TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Docusaurus, NextJS, Tailwind.

  • Excel at identifying manual processes that can be automated - and figure out how to.

  • Have experience developing, deploying, and maintaining infrastructure on providers like Netlify, GitHub Actions, Vercel, or similar.

  • Have either done work in public, open source, or chat systems like Discord – or want to!

  • Geek out on awesome robust integration testing systems, and can piece together integrations across disparate hardware and operating system requirements.

  • Are documentation-minded

  • Are rearing to bring your engineering experience and rigor to a nascent organization.
