Job Description

The Conversations team at Square builds Square Messages and Square Assistant, aimed at facilitating commerce over messaging while saving sellers' time. We're integrated into Square's point of sale apps on Web, iOS, and Android; the team powers nearly all of Square's buyer-facing communication, in addition to an integration with Facebook Messenger. The year ahead will see the team build out more inbound channels (e.g., a dedicated business line, web widgets, etc.) while building out more powerful automation and prioritization tools for upmarket businesses.

As an Engineering Manager on the Conversations team, you would lead a multidisciplinary team of Web, iOS, and Android engineers on building out features for the Messages applet within Square's point of sale apps. For example, incorporating AI from Square Assistant to show dynamic autocomplete suggestions as the seller types out a message, or suggest contextual actions for the seller to take in response to a buyer message, or build an inbox that can intelligently prioritize inbound messages.

You will...

  • Play a key role in building a messaging experience used by millions of sellers

  • Work with engineers and product managers across the Square ecosystem to bring Square-wide capabilities into Messages.

  • Collaborate with Backend and AI teams within Conversations to define APIs and requirements for the client team.

  • Work cross collaboratively with product managers and designers to iterate on and define product scope and design.

  • Mentor engineers and help cultivate their career aspirations

  • Ship cutting-edge AI to businesses that traditionally haven’t had access to it


You have…

  • 3+ years of experience leading medium sized teams (5+ engineers)

  • Expertise with mobile client development. Expertise with web development is a bonus, as is deep technical expertise in iOS.

  • Interest in helping to shape the mission and roadmap of a young team, and rallying others to join you

  • Eagerness to share your own ideas, and openness to those of others
