Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.
To solve this problem, we expanded into software and built integrated solutions to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. The Omnichannel Commerce team at Square builds products and platform-level solutions that are vital to Square’s ecosystem. The Items team, a sub-team of Omnichannel Commerce, is focused on helping merchants easily manage their omnichannel items available across multiple surface areas. We’re building a single source-of-truth omnichannel item library that enables Sellers to sell anywhere in the world. While Square has had an established item catalog for years, our team is focused on defining and building the next generation library that scales along with our diverse Seller base.
This is a high-visibility role and we’re looking for someone that is motivated by complex problems. You’ll be responsible for contributing to the design, vision, and decisions that directly influence the Item product and roadmap. On this team, your work will span from core features to experimental explorations to multi-year vision projects. We believe in generalists that have a hand in each stage of product development, so Product Designers at Square take projects from napkin sketches to final visual specifications.
You will work with other designers, product managers, analysts, and engineers. You will report to the Design Lead of Omnichannel Commerce.
- At least 5 years of relevant professional design experience
- A portfolio highlighting work where you were the primary designer, with moderate guidance from design leadership
- Experience connecting your design work with product, team, and company goals
- You plan, scope, and create work that contributes to a larger, long-term plan
- You know when to compromise without sacrificing user experience or design principles
- You have the ability to clearly communicate your ideas and work to your direct team and partner teams
- You take pride in the quality of your work and create professional, well-thought-out designs using established design systems
- You propose and participate in usability and field research

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Zone A: USD $152,100 - USD $185,900
Zone B: USD $144,500 - USD $176,700
Zone C: USD $136,900 - USD $167,300
Zone D: USD $129,300 - USD $158,100

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
