Job Description

As Privacy Counsel, you'll have a broad range of responsibilities providing legal guidance on global projects affecting privacy, data protection and security at Square. You will partner with teams to advise on data uses while managing legal risk and ensuring regulatory compliance and to mature our global privacy program. You will also be called upon to provide privacy and data security expertise to our commercial attorneys as they negotiate complex commercial deals that contribute to our business needs. As we expand our offerings globally, your ideas and contributions will make an immediate impact. You will report to Privacy Counsel Lead, Square.

You Will:

  • Provide global privacy and data security subject-matter expertise to and in collaboration with all cross-functional aspects of our business (including Counsel, Product, InfoSec, Engineering, and others)

  • Partner with commercial counsel and procurement to provide privacy subject-matter support for commercial agreements and vendor management

  • Remain up-to-date on relevant consumer protection, privacy and data security laws and regulations, industry approaches to privacy program management, and on privacy and security technological developments, threat vectors, and evolving industry standards to provide forward-thinking solutions to complex issues

  • Remain current on proposed privacy legislation and collaborate with our Government Relations team on advocacy efforts

  • Update privacy notices and disclosures, and manage/update internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with global laws bearing on privacy and cybersecurity

  • Help enhance the existing global privacy program, including: privacy operations and documentation; employee training on data privacy and security; policy enforcement; privacy compliance program monitoring and auditing; and third-party risk assessment. Ensure the program's ongoing and efficient operation

  • Work with teams to scope and perform periodic data privacy hygiene assessments, mitigation and remediation, including data privacy by design and default, accountability and compliance monitoring, and the mitigation of privacy and security risks

Qualifications

You Have:

  • J.D. (or foreign equivalent) and active membership in at least one state bar

  • 5+ years of combined relevant experience as a practicing attorney, in a law firm, government agency, and/or in-house legal team, with a substantial number of those years focused on privacy and data protection

  • Subject matter expertise regarding global privacy laws and regulations (including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, as well as GLBA and other US state and international data protection frameworks)

  • Strategic vision and ability to spot issues and communicate complex legal issues to a variety of legal and non-legal partners across the company

  • Demonstrable experience negotiating, drafting, and updating documents and policies

  • Bias to action!

  • Experience/interest in fintech

  • Experience advising on data uses in artificial intelligence and machine learning

Additional Information

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $202,500 - USD $247,500
Zone B: USD $188,400 - USD $230,200
Zone C: USD $178,200 - USD $217,800
Zone D: USD $168,100 - USD $205,500

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Sales roles may be eligible to participate in a commission plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies.
