Job Description

We are looking for a new Senior Analyst on our team who will help scale our Emerging Initiatives. We launched these initiatives to grow Block's mission of economic empowerment by reinventing the way people work with and access financial services. These initiatives are in their early stages, so you will partner with leaders across multiple departments and providing unique insights to each initiative to shape their business strategy.

You will report to a manager within the Strategic Initiatives team and support our Emerging Initiatives, though we anticipate there will be opportunities overtime to work on other Strategic Initiatives projects based on your career goals and our capacity / needs.

The Strategic Initiatives function on the Finance & Strategy (F&S) team was formed in 2021 to focus on three things:

  • Lead strategy for "Emerging Businesses" for Block. Be the voice of where the market is going and where there is an opportunity for Block to take part, and help educate relevant partners, leading towards a plan for if & how Block will get involved (build, buy, partner). Over the past year, we have helped stand up 4 new initiatives (TBD, Bitcoin Wallet, Bitcoin Mining, and Lightning payment infrastructure) and we work with those teams to help define their strategies and make important decisions on product, partnerships, go-to-market, operations, and more.

  • Build the operating muscle for Block to succeed as it scales user growth and adds more business lines. Help us define how we want the company to operate at a corporate level and ensure that we find the balance between enabling our BUs / ("Blocks") to operate independently and creatively while maintaining a strong corporate culture. Lead efforts to enable operational efficiencies to support rapid scaling.

  • Serve as the Finance & Strategy voice on cross-Block initiatives including (but not limited to) corporate development (M&A, partnerships, investments), Treasury, Tax, Capital Markets, Counsel and People businesses

Job Duties:

  • Forecast and analyze financial performance, including managing the forecast model for the Emerging Initiatives, and communicating important takeaways to senior partners through regular performance review meetings
  • Prepare materials for product partners, senior leadership, investor relations, and our board to help bring understanding of performance to all partners

  • Partner with accounting and financial operations teams to run the monthly close process and report on variances in performance

  • Establish and improve our finance tools and systems to communicate performance

  • Build models, including impact and scenario analyses for new products, to understand short and long-term cost/benefit tradeoffs and size financial impact of contemplated launches or product changes

  • Manage ad hoc analyses and special projects as requested by the Emerging Initiatives teams and Finance partners related to our performance/metrics, P&L analysis, among other topics

  • Assess the viability of new business opportunities, strategic initiatives, and partnerships

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant industry experience (e.g. management consulting, investment banking, private equity, investments, strategic finance, corporate finance)
  • Excellent proficiency in financial modeling and Excel (can perform complex functions - you should be prepared for a case study)

  • An ability to execute independently and work with team members of all levels

  • Consistent track record of success and career progression

  • Basic understanding of the financial services industry and a commitment to Block's mission

Even better:

  • Strategic finance experience strongly preferred

  • Experience with crypto, hardware, semiconductor, consumer finance, payments, small business finance, or consumer SaaS companies

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $125,600 - USD $153,600
Zone B: USD $116,800 - USD $142,800
Zone C: USD $110,500 - USD $135,100
Zone D: USD $100,500 - USD $122,900

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Sales roles may be eligible to participate in a commission plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies.
