Software Engineer Intern, Risk (Summer 2023)

  • Intern

Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

This internship role is for a Software Engineer Intern on the Risk Engineering team in Dublin. Risk Engineering works to protect Block and our customers from fraud and payment disputes. To do this, we build systems to detect and respond to potential fraud threats, provide outstanding tools to agents for investigating fraud events, and give our customers seamless web and mobile experiences to manage and fight payment disputes.

Our mission is to protect Block, protect our customers, and make a complicated and sometimes painful process understandable to all.

You Will:

  • Engage in our engineering intern program where you will be paired with an industry engineer to further develop your software engineering skills.
  • Learn how to operate effectively within an Agile software engineering environment.
  • Learn how to work cross functionally with software engineering and machine learning teams across Block to develop risk based products.
  • Learn how to build complex enterprise level systems from industry engineers.
Collaborate with industry engineers to support the development of new products and features.
  • Learn how to work independently on small engineering projects.

  • Square internships are 12-weeks and co-op placements are 16 weeks, available for Summer 2023
  • Problem solver: you like to decompose problems and experiment to create innovative solutions.
  • Interest in learning how to work full-stack across multiple technical domains, including backend microservices and both internal and external-facing tools
  • Passion for being involved with a project from end to end: learning how to work with product managers to understand requirements, contributing to design docs, building the code and writing unit tests.
  • Data and metrics-oriented mindset: you’ll learn how to make your work measurable and impactful
  • Customer empathy: you aim to understand your customers’ needs and requirements
  • Interest in learning how to work in a modern development environment using the latest DevOps technologies
