iOS Software Engineer - OS Systems, Cash App

  • Full-time

Company Description

It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 47 million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world’s relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible. This is our mission, and it’s why working at Cash App means so much more than a job.

Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We’ve been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.

Job Description

The Team

As a valuable member of the OS Systems team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining systems and primitives that help every client engineer at Cash App accomplish their jobs in a more efficient manner. We’ve grown our organization significantly and are working to build scalable, easy to understand internal infrastructure that now supports 10x the number of engineers that the current infrastructure was designed for. In short, we believe Cash is big and will only get bigger, and thus we want to build “Cash OS” as a foundational layer within the Cash App application for both current and future features. We believe solving these problems will mean embracing open source technologies in many cases, and encourage contributing back to the open source community.

The Job

This team has spent the past year working to define its roadmap, but there is still lots to do and many undefined areas. Like any operating system, we believe it will grow and evolve indefinitely. The team includes some of the most senior members of the iOS organization, who have lots of experience working with others, and is a great opportunity to learn and grow. Team members are encouraged to identify and define their own projects based on the needs of the organization and to regularly work with those outside of their immediate team.

Projects for this team include (but are not limited to):

  • Creating a scalable plugin-like system for features into the app. Sort of like support for mini apps within Cash App.
  • Improving client/server interaction/APIs to reduce complexity and minimize errors
  • Identifying and fixing poor APIs or architectural inefficiencies to increase developer velocity
  • Identifying and prototyping shared documentation extraction systems to increase documentation visibility

You will:

  • Build and maintain tools that increase the leverage of every client engineer at Cash App
  • Solicit input from our client engineering organization to solve problems holistically across our ecosystem
  • Have a meaningful impact on the speed at which our engineering organization delivers to our customers
  • Maintain, monitor, and remediate issues within (and surrounding) the core primitives that you have created in the Cash OS
  • Embrace and contribute to open source software where needed

Qualifications

You have:

  • Experience creating readable, well-crafted, and maintainable code
  • Exceptional communication skills in written and oral form (describing ideas, discussing approaches, presentations, status updates, and generally working with peers to collaboratively reach solutions)
  • Ability to work with remote teams and operate autonomously in a different timezone
  • A commitment to continuous improvement (yourself, your teammates, your software)
  • A history of dealing with large codebases and organization scalability
  • A desire to shape the solution to broad problems within the mobile infrastructure space

Technologies we use and teach:

  • Swift, Kotlin (including multiplatform), Ruby
  • Cocoapods, Bazel, Gradle, Jenkins
  • Protocol Buffers
