Job Description

As a Data Analyst, you’ll be supporting Square’s Finance & Strategy (F&S) teams. The primary focus of your job will be writing complex SQL queries to build out automated dashboards in a data visualization tool such as Looker or Tableau. The goal is that these dashboards will save the F&S team time on manual reporting while allowing them to garner insights from the data that they couldn't before.

You Will:

  • Write SQL queries to support ad-hoc requests and interactive Looker dashboards that you will design, validating the data for accuracy in the process. Dashboards will be built to help our stakeholders garner insights and recommendations from the data, as well as saving time through automation.
  • Interact with our F&S stakeholders directly, including providing updates on the progress of projects in weekly touchpoint meetings.
  • Automate data feeds into spreadsheets to save F&S stakeholders time on manual reporting
  • Perform maintenance on existing dashboards, including, but not limited to, setting up and monitoring alerts in tools like Anomalo to ensure the data remains accurate (Block has the tools to automate reporting, but also has a very complex data ecosystem that makes maintenance necessary)

Qualifications

You Have:

  • At least 4 years of experience in a data analytics, business intelligence, or data engineering capacity
  • Highly skilled at SQL
    • Experience in SQL with window functions, case when statements, aggregations, and common table expressions (or “with statements”)
    • Expertise at validating data in SQL queries and debugging queries when data is not accurate or when queries won’t run
  • Extensive experience building interactive dashboards in a data visualization platform such as Looker, Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, Mode, ThoughtSpot, etc. (experience with any data visualization platform is okay - Looker will be used primarily in this role, but can be trained if the candidate has experience with a comparable tool)
  • Experience working directly with the end users of dashboards and reporting throughout the build process
  • Experience with cloud based databases such as Snowflake, BigQuery, etc
  • Skilled with spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets)
  • Strong communication skills

Nice to Have:

  • Experience interpreting data and garnering insights and recommendations
  • Experience with data quality and alerting tools like Anomalo, and/or experience dealing with problems caused by upstream datasources
  • Knowledge of finance and accounting basics, or experience analyzing financial data
  • Experience creating ETLs using tools such as Airflow or using tools like FiveTran to feed data into databases

Technologies We Use:

  • Reporting - Looker
  • Data Warehouse - Snowflake, BigQuery
  • Cloud Suites - AWS, GCP
  • Data Integration & Scheduling - Fivetran, Airflow
  • Version Control - GitHub
