Product Manager, Financial Data

  • Full-time
  • Alternate Location: San Francisco, United States

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

The Square Banking team creates remarkable financial products tailor-made for the self-made, by deeply understanding the challenges of running and growing a small business. We’re creating value and stickiness in the Square ecosystem by helping our sellers get quick access to their funds, save for the future, manage their expenses, and get access to fair, timely capital as their first choice lender.

As the Financial Data Product Manager, you report to the Banking Platform Lead PM and will build the core data capabilities to help Banking teams ship remarkable products powered by financial data about a Square seller’s business, such as bank financial data, data from other payments and commerce platforms, and accounting system data. These capabilities include a common Financial Data Schema for Block; ingestion and storage of data from external sources; standardization, aggregation and enrichment of data; publishing data to consuming teams.

Your Financial Data platform will be a key enabler of major strategic bets for Square Banking, including next-generation credit underwriting; expense management; accelerated access to business revenue; holistic cash flow visualization and insights; and timely, relevant financial recommendations. Your customers are teams building financial products within Square Banking and Block, and you will take on a unique role in evangelizing our vision for financial data to them and helping them unlock the value of financial data to their products.

You will drive platform initiatives from inception through execution. You’ll identify opportunities to consolidate and improve capabilities across Block and drive adoption to help all our teams go faster. You’ll look ahead of our current state to anticipate the future needs of the Banking business and build to meet us there. You will collaborate closely with peer product managers building financial products, engineers, data scientists, counsel and other cross-functional team members to ensure that our platform can support cash flow products that amaze and delight sellers.

You will:

  • Drive adoption and usage of Square Banking’s Financial Data platform

  • Work with product teams, underwriting data science, risk and others to understand the needs of teams managing financial products

  • Partner closely with engineering teams to define a vision for core platform capabilities, to inform the vision with industry and technology trends

  • Own OKRs and build a roadmap for your platform capabilities based on the needs of future financial product launches, and our ambitions for scale and speed to market

  • Own key measurements (KPIs) of the platform’s adoption and performance and work to develop a measurement feedback loop into the roadmap to continuously improve

  • Evaluate external vendors for key capabilities and articulate a platform build/buy strategy

  • Influence key stakeholders throughout Block in order to align intent, resources, and prioritization

  • Operate cross-functionally and build strong partnerships both within Block and with external vendors to deliver excellent products and services

  • Foster an environment that enables the team to execute quickly while maintaining a high standard for quality

  • Manage the entire platform product life cycle from ideation, to planning, execution and launch

Qualifications

You have:

  • 8+ years of experience in product management and experience owning a platform product specifically

  • Data experience: Experience working with a (preferably financial) data platform at scale. You’ve done things like defined data schemas, worked within data security and privacy standards, helped design how data flows between systems

  • Technical fluency: You understand modern data technologies (e.g. Kafka, Databricks) and architectural patterns, and the use cases data can enable (machine learning models, data analytics). You can get deep into discussion with both engineers and data scientists

  • Collaborative approach: You deliver results with cross-functional teams, and partner with and empower team members appropriately. You have been responsible for evangelizing a technical vision and building support for it. You can persuade other teams to alter their roadmaps to align with your vision.

  • Analytical skills: You have a data-driven learning style and you have made extensive use of quantitative information to make product decisions

  • Results: Proven track record delivering platform products with demonstrable contribution to business outcomes

  • Customer-centric: Experience shaping platform direction and execution based on developer and Square seller needs

  • Strategic: Experience developing and driving key strategies that shaped an organization
