Engineering Manager, Observability
Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.
The Observability Engineering Manager leads a high performing team to provide the infrastructure and tooling to help Block engineers understand and troubleshoot their infrastructure and consumer products at scale. Builds and continuously improves the systems to ensure high reliability and performance through metrics, logging, and traces through ownership of a streaming event and analytics platform unifying data across Block’s various business units. Provide the connectivity from the source of where telemetry is created through to its consumption and creation of insights for driving optimization and efficiency of Block’s systems.
That Observability Team is divided into two focus areas. The Experience Squad, chartered with building the tooling to enable developers to emit events and metrics and interact with and reason about their telemetry in an effective, efficient manner. This group also supports Block wide reliability efforts through tooling to establish consistency across the company, derive insights from data and make it actionable. The Infrastructure Squad, chartered with owning the pipelines that makes all of our observability practices, scalable and resilient. They ensure we have the infrastructure and frameworks that support the use cases and solutions needed both by our Experience Squad and our future users of our converged pipeline.
