Documentation Lead
- Full-time
Company Description
It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay/Clearpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 47 million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world’s relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible.
Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We’ve been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.

Job Description
We are looking for a documentation strategist to lead the creation and own the vision of our sole documentation destination for the creators of Cash App, starting with someone to champion the operationalization and adoption of our new design system across design and engineering.
Design Systems is a part of the Operating Systems abstraction with the mission to create an infinitely scalable Cash App. We operate alongside teams that design and build the core architecture and technical services that power all of Cash App, as well as creative teams that are responsible for our brand and the creative evolution of our design language. Outside our immediate abstraction, we partner the most with product design verticals, our brand identity team, consumer insights, content and writing, design operations, and client engineering. We love integrations, we love automation, and we love experimenting. We just have a lot of love, ok.
This role will work day to day with our two Design Systems Leads (Design and Eng) and our key partnerships with Engineering, Product Design, and Content Design to organize, design, and build our standards’ architecture for completeness and ease of use. This includes providing clarity and efficiency for our teams internally while helping shape higher-quality, more consistent product experiences for our customers. This massive undertaking will start with the 0-1 launch of our documentation site, followed by getting all teams that write documentation onto the platform and managing the standards and constant improvement of the ultimate documentation resource for the creators at Cash App.
You will:
Lead vision and maintain design and technical documentation
- Design, own, and communicate the vision for our ecosystem of documentation as well as its distribution
- Architect documentation frameworks, templates, sites, and their interconnectedness—working with Design and Engineering to provide a consolidated home for both design and technical documentation
- Operationalize documentation programs—providing templates, frameworks, and clear policies for subject matter experts to contribute to
- Edit documentation contributions for consistency and adherence to our set standards, and publish standards to our internal site
Build and manage documentation policies
- Define the quality bar for design and technical documentation
- Set policies for and own content governance—including creating standards for documentation upkeep, defining documentation DRIs, and working with Design Operations to define the approval process for new documentation
Be an OS Team advocate
- Fight inconsistency across Cash product building, driving clarity and efficiency for internal teams by making sure our documentation is as complete and easy-to-use as possible
- Champion the operationalization and adoption of the standards we establish from within OS, serving as an ambassador to all product-building teams when it comes to questions of our shared standards
Qualifications
You have:
- 10+ years of experience working in user experience, knowledge management, or relevant design field
- 2+ years experience working in related design systems or design operations role
- Exemplary organizational skills
- Experience streamlining and managing documentation processes, programs, and operations within a large product organization
- Experience defining and scaling strong content governance and content management across teams
- Excellent information architecture skills
- Past work showcasing the development and maintenance of robust design or knowledge management systems or documentation for software applications
- Strong ability to manage scope and stakeholders and facilitate collaborative efforts to connect the dots
- Past work showcasing experience leading technical or design documentation efforts, including people you worked with and resources you created
- Past work demonstrating ability to write and edit clear, comprehensive, well-structured, and accurate technical or design documentation
Even better:
- Experience building out technical or design documentation from zero to one
- Experience leading technical or design documentation teams
