Company Description

ABOUT BLOCK

We started “Square” as one business serving one audience, and needless to say: we’ve grown. We’ve created new businesses and brands, serving multiple audiences.

Today, we’re Square for sellers, Cash App for consumers, TIDAL for artists, TBD for bitcoin developers and bitcoin hardware for those wanting to participate in the new economic reality.

Together, we’re Block and share only one goal: build simple tools to empower people into the economy.

Square Ecosystem - Founded in 2009 and officially a public company in 2015, Square’s original goal was to help sellers accept credit card payments anywhere. Today, Square helps sellers more easily run and grow their businesses with its integrated ecosystem of commerce solutions, business software, and banking services.

Cash App Ecosystem - In 2013, we launched Cash App, which is focused on redefining the world’s relationship with money by making it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible. Cash App builds financial tools that allow individuals to store, send, receive, spend, save and invest their money.

Spiral - In 2020, we began Spiral to build and fund free, open source projects that advance the use of Bitcoin as a tool for economic empowerment and enable better business opportunities for Block.

TIDAL - In 2021, we acquired a majority ownership stake in TIDAL, a global platform for musicians and their fans that supports unique content, experiences, and services to bring fans closer to the artists they love and give artists the tools to succeed as entrepreneurs.

TBD - In 2021, we added a new business unit to our company, TBD. TBD’s mission is to build an open developer platform with the sole goal of making it easier to create non-custodial, permissionless, and decentralized financial services.

Afterpay - In 2022, we completed the acquisition of Afterpay, a global ‘buy now, pay later’ (BNPL) platform that facilitates commerce between retail merchants and end-customers. Afterpay is a platform within the Cash App and Square ecosystems, strengthening the connection between these businesses and expanding access to more sellers and customers.
