Full Stack Software Engineer, Risk

  • Full-time

Company Description

We started with a simple idea—that everyone should be able to accept credit cards—and we’ve been rethinking buying and selling ever since.

For sellers, we’re creating one cohesive service to run your entire business, from a register in your pocket to analytics on your laptop. For buyers, we’re making it faster to order from the businesses you love and more fun to pay your friends back.

Buying and selling sound like simple things—and they should be. Somewhere along the way, they got complicated. We’re working hard to make commerce easy for everyone.

Job Description

The Risk Systems team keeps Square in business, by protecting Square and our merchants from fraud. In turn, this enables Square to keep bringing innovative solutions to millions of merchants. From developing infrastructure to working with internal and external partners, we find the best ways to mitigate risk while providing our customers with the best customer experience, in a way that is cost-effective, available, scalable, secure, and forward-looking.

As a software engineer on the Risk Systems team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the Risk Systems services and infrastructure that protect Square and its merchants from fraud and credit risk. You will be deeply involved in the technical details of building highly available and reliable services, while also working with product, analytics and operations teams to understand ever evolving risk trends and to enable Square to roll out new products with low risk.

In particular, as a full stack engineer, you will be responsible for the tools and interfaces that we expose to our merchants and to all our internal stakeholders. This includes visualization, experimentation and customization layers on top of our rule engines, signal computation services and graph databases. It also includes tools and dashboard for our risk agents, empowering them to make fast and accurate decisions on any risky scenario.

Qualifications

You will:

  • Build our Risk Systems platform, a key strategic asset of Square, used to catch fraud and mitigate fraud across all Square products, as well as power machine learning models on Risk and non-Risk applications.
  • Design, implement and maintain user interfaces and user experiences that provide any risk stakeholder (engineer, data scientist, product owner, ops agent) with high degrees of visibility and customizability.
  • Build data visualizations, dashboards and tools to enable fast and accurate decision making by our risk agents.
  • Work closely with other engineering teams to seamlessly integrate relevant data into our risk controls.
  • Build systems that manage customers’ sensitive data and hold Square to the highest standards for security and compliance.
  • Work cross-functionally with our product, analytics and operations team to stay on top of risk trends and respond quickly to new fraud vectors.
  • See the big picture to design fault tolerant systems so the team can be brave, move fast, and break things, without ever showing a negative impact to customers.

You have:

  • Taste for data visualization and how to display large amounts of data to drive decisions.
  • Data and metrics-oriented mindset: you want your work to be measurable and impactful.
  • Customer empathy: you understand your customers’ needs and requirements and build user experiences that meet those needs.
  • Drive to change the payments landscape in the US and globally

Technologies we use:

  • Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, Ember, MySQL, Java.
