Electrical Design Engineer

  • Full-time

Company Description

We started with a simple idea - that everyone should be able to accept credit cards - and we’ve been rethinking buying and selling ever since. For sellers, we’re creating one cohesive service to run your entire business, from a register in your pocket to analytics on your laptop. For buyers, we’re making it faster to order from the businesses you love and more fun to pay your friends back. Buying and selling sound like simple things - and they should be. Somewhere along the way, they got complicated. We’re working hard to make commerce easy for everyone.

Job Description

Our hardware team builds the tangible connection to all that is square. With the Square Card Reader and the introduction of Square Stand, our family of devices is growing in terms of technologies and payment types—and this is only the beginning. As we introduce more and more of our products to the world, our hardware footprint expands.

Square’s mission demands ever increasingly aggressive electrical designs that now include near-field communication (NFC), custom in-house designed silicon, and increasingly complex CPU core designs. All of this must coexist with the demands of high active security (tamper detection), power management, and low-cost manufacturability in high quantities. We are looking for a passionate electrical design engineer who craves these challenges.

  • Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and factory test engineers, developing cohesive, elegant solutions
  • Design low-power, low-cost embedded systems that are optimized for volume production “cradle to grave”
  • Be completely responsible for the behavior of the electrons in the system
  • Travel internationally ~20%

You have:

  • 5+ years experience as an electrical engineer in embedded systems
  • Experience designing and shipping high-volume consumer products
  • Expertise in the hardware lab with test, measurement, and prototyping
  • Expertise in developing schematics and leading PCB layout activities
  • Expertise knowledge of standard communication interfaces such as SPI, USB, I2C, RS232
  • Experience with 8-bit to 32-bit RISC and ARM processors
  • Hands-on experience with EMC design and debug
  • Strong skills in low-power design, detailed power analysis, and optimization
  • Solid understanding of NFC and high frequency wireless (Bluetooth, etc) design
  • Extensive experience on site with contract manufacturers in Asia
  • BS in electrical engineering or related field

Even Better:

  • Experience in analog design
