Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Mental Health Commissioner shall be responsible for overseeing the Mental Health
Coordinators and be accountable for the mental health committees of the Legislative Council.
They facilitate the implementation of Mental Health initiatives under the supervision of the VP
(Student Life). They will also act as the main student advocate between the SSMU and McGill’s
Student Wellness Hub and other university stakeholders.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Advocate for mental health initiatives and resources at the university level;
2. Champion new and ongoing mental health initiatives and resources amongst the
student body;
3. Provide oversight and guidance to the SSMU Mental Health portfolio in identifying and
responding to student needs;
4. Oversee the Outreach and Advocacy Coordinators and their respective Committees;
5. Chair the Mental Health Roundtable;
6. Coordinate the implementation and update of the SSMU Mental Health Policy & Plan;
7. Attend relevant university committees, including but not limited to the Student
Wellness Hub Advisory Board, the Health & Dental Insurance Committee, the HLA
Student CoDesign Committee, the Student Suicide Pre- & Post-vention Framework
steering committee, and keep.meSAFE stakeholder meetings;
8. Liaise regularly with representatives from the Student Wellness Hub and university
administration;
9. Provide formal and informal guidance to the student body regarding available
resources, accommodations, and rights & responsibilities;
10. Advance a university-wide culture shift towards well-being by pushing for systems-
level change, ensuring accountability, and engaging diverse stakeholders.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:
To undertake other duties and responsibilities as seen fit and/or as assigned by the Vice-
President (Student Life).

Qualifications

1. Deep understanding of student mental health and associated initiatives, issues, and
resource needs;
2. Knowledge of the SSMU and of McGill University;
3. Strong skills in communication, relationship building, and negotiation;
4. Able to work independently and in a team environment;
5. Diligence and impartiality in execution of duties;
6. Ability to work effectively under pressure;
7. Organized and capable of following through on a project;
8. Ability to identify and adapt to dynamic student needs;
9. Ability to take initiative and provide results-driven leadership;
10. Knowledge of student governance and student politics an asset;
11. Experience in leading committees or student groups an asset;
12. Involvement in Mental Health initiatives on campus is an asset.

Additional Information

  • Paid position: $15.40/hour
  • Hours: On average 5 hours per week;
  • Contract: Mid-June, 2023 – May 31, 2024;
