Job Description

To support this mission, Syngenta’s Bioinformatics Platform is seeking a Bioinformatics Pipeline Engineer in the UK. This role will support the delivery of production grade Bioinformatics products by developing well-engineered Bioinformatics Pipelines which generate FAIR data and designing, developing, and maintaining standards. This will ensure alignment across different R&D functions and sciences, including Genomics, Metabarcoding, Transcriptomics, Proteomics and Metabolomics.

Accountabilities

  • Being accountable for the design and development of scalable Nextflow pipelines, either through direct development or by guiding third-party implementations, ensuring automated testing and quality control measures
  • Establish and govern pipeline development standards, best practices, and documentation across R&D
  • Manage pipeline infrastructure, including versioning, deployment processes, and compatibility across compute environments
  • Provide technical leadership in pipeline architecture and design, code reviews, and technical guidance to both internal teams and third-party developers
  • Collaborate with scientists, business analysts and engineers to gather requirements and architect efficient pipeline solutions, coordinating implementation with internal teams or external partners

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BSc/MSc in Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or related field
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience of engineering
  • Strong software engineering foundation including version control, automated testing, containerization (Docker/Singularity), scripting (Python, R, Shell), monitoring and observability tools, Agile methodologies
  • Experience in designing and developing production-grade ETL pipelines
  • Demonstrated experience with cloud computing platforms (preferably AWS) and HPC environments, including performance optimization and resource management
  • Proven track record in setting up processes and engineering decision making

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in life sciences, working with biologists or chemists
  • Experience in Bioimnformatics domain, Nextflow and NF core
