Job Description

A Controller at TGG Accounting serves as a Controller for multiple clients, across various industries, concurrently. The Controller is responsible for all day-to-day accounting activities at a client, culminating with the delivery of timely and accurate financial statements to the TGG Consulting CFO and client. The Controller also shares client ownership with the CFO on the engagement, responsible for proactive communication, managing expectations, dealing with issues and concerns, invoicing and budgeting, and overall relationship maintenance.

A TGG Controller typically manages a team of 2-3 staff (Accounting Manager, Staff Associate, Staff Assistant), while also communicating and providing deliverables to the TGG CFO and client. The position requires strong project management skills with the ability to balance competing priorities and deliver quality results within a pre-determined timeframe and on budget. A Controller is also expected to be exceptionally proficient technically, adept at understanding and reporting on complex financial transactions, as well as the setup of effective processes, procedures, internal controls and general risk management.

A Controller plays a key role in teaching and mentoring staff (both TGG and client staff) to help them understand a variety of advanced accounting and business topics. Interacting with clients on a daily basis and setting an example for other staff, a Controller must present themselves in a professional manner and be able to communicate effectively with different personality styles. Controllers are expected to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to quality, have the drive to grow professionally, and a desire to create meaningful relationships with other employees, our clients, and their staff. A Controller reports to the assigned CFO for each client team.

Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, Experience, Training & Education

  • 8-10+ years of experience involved in management of a business, including oversight of financial statement production and month end close procedures
  • Strong technical understanding of GAAP accounting standards
  • Expert level understanding of financial and managerial accounting principles normally represented by a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combinations of industry experience and training 
  • Have a strong understanding of foundational accounting principles (e.g. structure of a P&L, BS, T accounts, matching principle, pre-paid vs. accrual vs. deferred, bank vs. book balance, etc.) with the ability to explain and teach to other staff
  • Be able to understand implications of accounting entries and the effect on all financial statements
  • Advanced level understanding of business operations for large, complex clients across multiple industries
  • Ability to evaluate job performance based on objective and subjective metrics and to provide appropriate constructive criticism in order to effect behavior
  • Ability to communicate and teach general accounting concepts to clients and staff
  • Be able to review financial statements for errors
  • Ability to work in a consulting type environment with multiple clients and staff teams – ability to start and stop on work multiple times throughout the day
  • Effective delegation on a project from start to finish
  • Experience building and using financial models

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  •  Be able to work 50-60 hours per week

Additional Information

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Overall project management, including project planning, staffing, execution and adherence to budget, profitability targets and deadlines
  • Lead client communication when applicable (in person and electronically), including financial statement presentation, often directly with business owners and C-level executives
  • Review and approve financial statements before delivery to CFO and/or client
  • Create financial summary, company overview and KPI commentary in financial statement packets
  • Build, maintain and utilize cash flow forecasts, with a focus on analysis of needs
  • Supervise entire month-end close process
  • Implement proper policies, procures and controls to ensure proper controls and generate efficiency improvements
  • Provide financial and managerial accounting expertise
  • Take part in negotiations (e.g. funding, leases, etc.)
  • Establish (with CFO) appropriate key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Navigate through and maintain complex Excel models
  • Maintain relationships with other client financial advisors (e.g. tax, banking, legal, etc.)
  • Manage tasks that have been done and need to be done, helping to keep other team members on track
  • Cultivate and maintain client internal staff relationships in person and via phone/email
  • Provide frequent updates to other team members on client progress, issues, etc.
  • Review the work product and provide feedback and training to TGG staff and client internal staff
  • Review and supervise all responsibilities and tasks of Accounting Managers
  • Review invoices for accuracy and content
  • Take a proactive approach to finding new work or adding value to a client
  • Participate in routine calls/meetings with clients
  • Perform ad hoc tasks at client’s request
  • Handle escalated collection or dispute issue
  • Interview potential candidates
  • Approve adjusting journal entries
  • Maintain professional presence at client locations
  • Demonstrate leadership through adherence to all TGG policies and procedures
  • Understand and be able to perform relevant benchmarking and ratio analysis
  • Create and maintain client budget and forecast activities
  • Investigate and provide final accounting guidance on complex accounting issues
  • Launch or transition to/from various accounting systems
  • Investigate issues escalated from Accounting Managers (internet research when necessary)
  • Daily time entry into TGG time tracking system
  • Attend and/or lead required staff meetings and be punctual
  • Use Outlook calendar to manage schedule efficiently and effectively
  • Meet minimums for billable hours and attend required training
  •  Positively represent TGG in the community
  •  Required daily travel to client locations
