Job Description

The Onion is seeking an ambitious and enthusiastic Public Relations Intern. The internship is slated to run 3 - 4 months. Ideal applicants should be able to work 24 hours per week (weekdays only) out of our Chicago, IL headquarters.

Day-to-day design responsibilities include:

  • compile and build media distribution lists

  • seed written and video content

  • track media hits/compile weekly media reports

  • research media outlets for future Onion Inc. coverage

  • write and distribute company press releases

  • support social media outreach

  • support Onion Inc. public relations strategy


Ideal candidates should possess the following skills:

  • Strong desire to learn the digital media public relations environment

  • Experience using many different forms of social media

  • Excellent writing and grammar skills

  • Quick learner, self-motivated, and able to multi task on multiple projects simultaneously

  • Works well under pressure and deadlines

This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, proof-reading skills, the ability to work to deadlines and effectively multi-task. Ideal candidates will display a strong understanding of the Onion's unique brand and readership. Candidates pursuing a degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Business, Marketing or another related field strongly preferred.
