Job Description

The Onion is seeking an ambitious and enthusiastic Design Fellow. The fellowship is slated to run 3 - 4 months (starting as soon as possible). Ideal applicants should be able to work up to 40 hours/week (weekdays only) out of our Chicago, IL headquarters.

The main focus of the fellowship is to assist the Onion's sales and marketing teams with day-to-day design requests and web ad production. Ideal applicants will learn how design supports the day-to-day functions and core operations of various Onion departments.

Day-to-day design responsibilities include:

  • Keynote design for national sales, marketing, senior management and editorial teams
  • Support the Onion, A.V. Club, and Clickhole editorial and marketing departments
  • Work with the Design department to create web and print ads
  • Work on internal communication reports and projects
  • Image searching, resizing and retouching
  • Day-to-day design needs and support
  • Help organize and develop a company-wide file organization system

Qualifications

Ideal candidates should possess the following skills:
  • Highly skilled in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Proficient in Keynote (or able to learn and master quickly)
  • Knowledge of web standards and limitations for web ads
  • Experience designing for print and the associated limitations
  • Impeccable attention to detail, layout and organization
  • Must have a keen eye for design and strive to develop aesthetically pleasing end results
  • Ability to approach and solve problems through design methodology
  • Ability to receive and process criticism on creative work
  • Basic HTML/CSS/ knowledge is a plus

Additional Information

Ideal candidates will display a strong understanding of the Onion's unique brand and readership. As you will be working closely with brand related materials, candidates must be able to quickly learn and develop a design methodology that fits in with the global Onions design standards. Candidates must be organized, attentive to detail, and willing to tackle new design challenges that arise from working in such a unique position.
