Job Description

Other Academic Services

About the role

An exceptional opportunity has opened up to join the University’s Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment (DELNA). This large and well-established programme screens incoming undergraduate and postgraduate students, including  doctoral candidates and advises those with language needs on the options available for developing their academic literacy as they pursue their studies.

The DELNA Language Advisers have a key role in the DELNA process as they provide feedback on students’ language skills, particularly in writing, guide students to appropriate language enrichment on campus and advise on particular courses or programmes they should take up. Two advisers share the duties of the position.

Beyond the immediate demands of advising students and maintaining the records of students seen and advice given, the DELNA Language Advisers work closely with the raters of the DELNA writing tasks. The guidance and feedback provided at DELNA are largely based on students’ writing assessment. DELNA writing raters are trained by the Advisers, who must fully understand the rating of the DELNA tasks.

At DELNA, there is an ongoing need to develop new forms of the assessment tasks to keep the assessment upto-date and to protect the security of the materials. All members of the DELNA Team are involved in the development of the assessment and, during the year, the Advisers work together to develop vocabulary and timed reading tasks for the DELNA Screening and writing tasks for the Diagnosis.

Our ideal candidate

The Advisers need to display very good communication and networking skills. Within the University, this includes dealing with student needs; liaison with staff teaching English credit courses or language tutorials across the University; close cooperation with the other members of the DELNA Team; and promoting the merits of DELNA at every opportunity.

The position requires someone with a postgraduate qualification in English or Language Teaching, and an ESOL qualification. In-depth knowledge of academic writing and language enrichment are essential. Professional experience in language teaching at secondary or post-secondary level is also vital. Knowledge of language assessment is also desirable.
