Job Description

The School of Environment at the University of Auckland (New Zealand) is expanding its Environmental Management programme to lead national and global debates around pressing social-ecological challenges and opportunities. We seek to appoint a critical social scientist to help us achieve this goal. This position is for a senior scholar and is anticipated to be appointed at the (Full) Professorial or Associate Professorial level.

The Ideal Candidate

We seek a senior scholar whose teaching and research expertise fall within the broad intersections of nature-society relations. The successful appointee will provide leadership for the Environmental Management programme. We are looking for a scholar who will build on our existing research and teaching strengths within political ecology, environmental justice and critical human geography while contributing their specific area of theoretical and empirical expertise. The appointee will be expected to lead an exciting and relevant research programme, build generative and collegial relationships with students and colleagues, and contribute effectively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. It is anticipated that the appointee will continue to foster their current research networks, while also securing external funding and building new local and regional research initiatives. The appointee will also be responsible for mentoring early-mid career staff to increase their professional influence in national and global contexts.

 About the position

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading tertiary institution with 42,000 students and recently ranked 83= in the QS global university rankings. The School of Environment, situated in the Faculty of Science, includes more than fifty academic staff across Geography, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science and Environmental Management. The Environmental Management programme is grounded in critical social science and is largely taught by Human Geographers. Environmental Management is offered as a subject in the Masters of Science and as a Post-Graduate Diploma in Science. Environmental Management is one of the School’s most popular postgraduate programmes for both domestic and international students. The successful appointee will be involved in teaching within the undergraduate Geography programme and the postgraduate Environmental Management programme. The appointee will also be expected to supervise students at the Honours (4th year), Masters and PhD levels, including students from diverse backgrounds. The appointee should be prepared to seek and take advantage of the opportunities afforded through the diverse academic expertise across disciplines within the School and the wider university with the goal to further strengthen the Environmental Management programme.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • A social science PhD
  • Evidence of both research and teaching excellence
  • Research and teaching expertise in nature-society relations

 Preferred Qualifications

  • International research leadership
  • A strong collegial ethic
  • Expertise in areas such as (but not limited to): intersectionality, critical race theory, indigeneity, Global South, Asia-Pacific, global environmental policy, science and technology studies, and new materialisms.
