Job Description

We are currently seeking:

  • Experienced media professional (likely a former journalist)
  • Someone with a great eye for a good story

We are looking for an experienced journalist to manage the media for one of our key faculties and a leading Institute as part of the media team in the Communications Office.

Our media team works across the University and its faculties to identify and share stories through traditional and new media channels, and to enhance its reputation.

Our new media adviser will be responsible in the first instance for the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, and Liggins Institute. Your role will be to unearth the stories of new research, and faculty achievements and work with media to ensure they are heard. As well as proactive positioning, your job will include responding to incoming requests and connecting media with appropriate academics in a timely manner.

You will have professional media/writing/journalism skills, be able to meet deadlines and prioritise your work. Naturally, we are seeking someone with an eye for detail, excellent proofing ability and remarkable spelling and grammar.

You will need to build strong faculty relationships to find the unique points of difference and the areas of interest for local and international audiences. Increasingly we are working with social media, so you’ll need a good understanding of how to amplify the stories through the use of digital technology.

You may not have expertise in medical and health right now, but you will be willing and able to come up to speed to be able to prioritise stories and to translate technical research into readable copy.

Of course, you’ll be a strong team player, willing to pitch in and assist colleagues and share ideas.
