The School of Population Health is large and diverse with 300 staff encompassing disciplines and academic activities that focus on the prevention and treatment of ill-health and the promotion of health and wellbeing at the level of populations and communities. We bring together people with academic backgrounds in health sciences, social sciences and behavioural sciences, organised into six sections:
- Pacific Health
- Health Systems
- General Practice and Primary Health Care
- Epidemiology and Biostatistics
- Social and Community Health
We are seeking a Head of School who brings line and budget management experience to provide leadership to the diversity of academic interests in the School. The Head of School is appointed for a fixed term (renewable) of 5 years. The substantive academic appointment will be made according to the successful candidate’s research profile and academic experience, ideally at Full Professor level.
Working with a Management Committee (policy and direction) and Executive Committee (operational matters) the Head will demonstrate a collaborative, inclusive, leadership style, role-modelling cultural sensitivity and commitment to equity. Those not already familiar with our cultural context will demonstrate their commitment to developing their understanding of Māori and Pacific development, te tiriti o Waitangi and our place in the Pacific. Interpersonal strengths including excellent communication, an ability to lead strategically, advocate and influence will be appreciated.
Candidates will be internationally credible senior academics with significant records of peer-reviewed (preferably translational) research and research income generation; commitment to innovative teaching, curriculum development, digital pedagogies and postgraduate supervision. She/he will also be experienced in developing and mentoring junior academics, able to create a positive and supportive environment in which they will thrive.
The School’s key UG degree, BHSc, achieves strong graduate outcomes (72% employed in the health sector within three years of graduation). In addition, we have a number of PG qualifications, including the Master of Public Health and a thriving PhD programme.
A number of successful interventions have been developed by academics in the School and the Government’s Wellbeing Budget and commitment to public and mental health, and primary care interventions provide key strategic opportunities for the School to continue to have this impact.
The University of Auckland is Aotearoa New Zealand’s pre-eminent research-led University, and an international centre of learning and academic excellence. Based in the largest city, the main hub of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (Ranked in the top 100 universities in the world in the medical disciplines) is located on the Grafton Campus adjacent to Auckland City Hospital, with an academic presence in seven other sites across the upper North Island.
