Creative Arts and Industries (CAI) is a respected centre for creative research, teaching and practice at The University of Auckland. CAI offers undergraduate and postgraduate study of a wide range of creative disciplines within the Schools of Architecture and Planning (SoAP), Fine Arts, Music and the Dance Studies and Design Programmes.

Our Design programme is now in its third year, equipped with a range of high end analogue and digital technologies including; VR & AR headsets, high-end gaming PC’s, a motion-capture rig, makerspace (incl. laser cutters, CNC, electronics, sewing stations, 3d printers, etc), gaming consoles, video cameras, advanced AV mixing/streaming/recording equipment, and more!

Within the School of Architecture & Planning is a specialist unit known as the Digital Research Hub (drh.nz). The DRH assist staff and students with all things digital including, digital fabrication, AR/VR, 3D scanning (e.g. LiDAR, Handheld 3D scanners, and drone based photogrammetry), motion capture, projection mapping, GIS, software skills and much more.

Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented, technically proficient individual to work as an Audio-Visual Technician supporting our Creative Arts, Design, Architecture and Planning students and staff with their AV needs. This role is primarily based across the Design Programme and the School of Architecture and Planning. The successful candidate will be working alongside other Technicians in the faculty as well as the DRH staff and have the opportunity to develop their own skills in a very well-equipped environment.

Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Ensure the efficient and effective set up and operation of audio/visual installations, mixed classroom environments, AV recording and editing.
  • This includes the management of equipment, its usage and maintenance, health and safety requirements, and sustainable technical practices.
  • Provide technical expertise for the teaching, learning and research activities of the Faculty, across a broad range of disciplines.
  • Instruct and advise students and staffing best-practice techniques and the utilisation of relevant equipment in both discipline-specific and inter-disciplinary learning activities.

This is a permanent, full-time (37.5 hrs pw) position.

This essential role requires a well organised person to operate in a time critical environment with the ability to problem solve technical issues as they occur. You will be passionate about all things AV and will have an interest in advanced digital installations. You will have a good eye for detail and great problem-solving ability. Above all your friendly and approachable manor will be your best asset.

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • A qualification in a related and associated field of audio engineering, video production/post-production or creative arts
  • First aid certificate must be gained and maintained at all times
  • Sound, lighting, and video operation
  • 1-2 years proven experience providing AV support for events and functions
  • Experience in explaining and resolving difficult technical issues
  • Operation of AV systems and projectors
  • Ability to research, advise, configure and maintain a range of equipment and technologies
  • Strong digital literacy across multiple hardware and software platforms
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to keep calm under pressure
