Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The Faculty of Engineering is seeking a Senior Technician to provide expert technical services to support the teaching and research activities for staff and students of the Department of Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering.

You will provide expert technical services to academic staff, students and industrial stakeholders to enhance and support the teaching and research activities in the Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering Department, with special emphasis on the research and teaching activities of the Aerodynamics and Thermofluids laboratories, in a range of areas including (but not limited to) wind engineering, aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and energy production and conversion.

Some responsibilities of the role include:

Responsible for provision of independent expert advice/training, maintenance, design, build and development of laboratory equipment and/or processes and techniques, from miniature to conventional scales, including (but not limited to):

  • Wind tunnels
  • Traversing rigs
  • Engines (e.g. reciprocating; microscale power and thrust generation; etc.)
  • Thermal power systems (e.g., steam turbine; Organic Rankine cycle; etc.)
  • Dynamometers, emissions and analysis equipment
  • Flow visualisation equipment
  • Heating and cooling
  • Environmental chambers, air conditioning, refrigeration and control systems, humidifying and dehumidifying equipment
  • Fluid machines and turbomachinery
  • Hydrogen processing equipment
  • Maintain a high level of health and safety awareness and application
  • Contribute to projects as requested by Technical Team Leader

This role is permanent, full time, 37.5 hours per week. The salary range for this role is $64,600 - $79,800 per annum depending on experience and qualifications.

Qualifications

He kōrero mōu | About you

We are seeking someone with a trade certificate or bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering and/or work experience in either of forementioned disciplines. We would prefer you to have experience working in the tertiary environment.

The successful applicant will be an Engineer who is autonomous, a self-learner and a great team player. You will ideally demonstrate:

  • Sound practical engineering skills with good fabrication, machining and mechanical skills for building and assembling or reparing equipment
  • Strong relationship building skills and customer service focus, particularly with students and academics
  • Ability to work proactively, autonomously and within a team
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Ability to analyse, research, learn and adopt new methods and teaching activities
  • A health and safety focus and experience with health and safety management and implementation relevant to  mechanical engineering workshops
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Well-developed and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Good computer literacy and IT skills
  • Resilience and ability to adapt to changing external/market demands, technology, and internal initiatives which may require personal or professional development

Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team

Our Faculty of Engineering has grown to over 5,000 students – our undergraduate first-year intake includes over 800 students every year and continues to increase. We now have over 500 postgraduate students in both research and taught programmes.

You will be joining a 14 strong team of technical staff providing specialist support to the staff and students of the Department of Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering where the team is split 50/50 between the City Campus and the Newmarket Campus. We contribute technical knowledge and expertise to research and teaching activities while ensuring the ongoing operation and compliance of a vast range of laboratories, research equipment and teaching facilities.

This position primarily supports the laboratories on the Newmarket campus which include the Aerodynamics, Thermofluids and Mechanics of Materials laboratories, Centre for Advanced Composite Materials, and Plastics Centre of Excellence.
