Summer Camp Counselor

  • Full-time

Company Description

Welcome to Tumbleweed, where children ages 4-14 enjoy the wonders of nature in the beautiful Brentwood section of Los Angeles.  Offering a variety of camp programs and educational opportunities, Tumbleweed has provided an enriching atmosphere that has fostered growth and development in children since 1954.  From traditional day camp activities such as horseback riding, archery, and arts and craft to our own unique Tumblewheel and 40’ inflatable obstacle course, campers will get the opportunity to gain self-confidence and build lasting relationships in a nurturing environment.

At Tumbleweed, we focus more on growth and learning than just on doing activities. We teach social intelligence, self-control, gratitude, grit, curiosity, optimism and zest. Being a part of a camp group, with lots of new faces, builds social intelligence, giving campers greater ability to find solutions in conflicts with others. Trying new activities grows curiosity, teaching kids how to ask questions and helping them be even more eager to explore new things. And these are just a few examples!

Job Description

Join Tumbleweed Day Camp as a counselor in our 60th summer, and help children learn and grow while building your own leadership skills. At camp, you'll lead a group of up to 16 campers through a variety of activities (or, if you're a specialist, you'll teach those activities to groups as they come to your area). A summer as a camp staff member builds leadership, organization, and confidence, and prepares you for any career in the "real world"!

We're currently hiring for full-time positions (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm) for the entirety of the summer, June 16 through August 15. We also require staff to attend precamp orientation beginning June 7, so applicants must be available for all those dates.

Qualifications

One of the most important characteristics of a good staff person is a positive attitude. Camp is a fun place, and enthusiastic camp staff create a great environment for our campers! We're also looking for people who are willing to learn and grow over the course of the summer. Camp staff should be good teachers (of things like respect, friendship, and responsibility), so they can help campers grow, too! Obviously, you must also be someone who has the responsibility, energy, and endurance to arrive at camp on time each day, supervise and have fun with up to 16 campers for several hours, and handle a wide variety of problems or issues that may arise throughout camp.

Experience in a youth-development setting is desirable, but not required. We also prefer candidates who have had their driver's license for at least three years, as most of our staff drive camp vehicles.
