Job Description

The main function of an Instructional Developer/Designer is to design, develop, and maintain courses and learning support materials for a variety of delivery methods: classroom (webinar and in person delivery), self-study (online and paper-based) and blended learning.
 
The instructional designer will perform full cycle development that includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The instructional designer will manage design-related projects in conjunction with course development, and conduct peer reviews for accuracy, creativity, accelerated learning techniques, and adherence to standards.
 
The Instructional Designer supports trainers in the design and development of course materials for classroom, online, and blended learning.  The Instructional Designer will use strong interpersonal, written, and visual communication skills to perform the following tasks:

Conduct needs analysis to identify root cause of performance gaps
Conduct learner and context analysis
Work with subject matter experts and stakeholders to identify target audience's potential training needs
Identify alternative solutions to address performance gaps if training is not the appropriate solution
Determine the training delivery method that best meets the learner's need (classroom, e-Learning, etc.). Analysis includes:

Interviewing subject matter experts, project managers, technical experts
Learning and familiarizing self with subject;
Analyzing audience skill level
Synthesizing the information gathered to develop a training plan
Create design documents to provide:

A training outline or storyboard
Timeline for project completion including key milestones
Develop instruction for classroom, online delivery, self-study, performance support, etc. using:

Proven instructional design techniques
Creative design practices
Theories related to adult learning and other disciplines related to learning, motivation, and information processing
Software and systems to create instruction (e.g., Word, L(C)MS, PowerPoint, Captivate, Storyline, Captivate)
Sound criterion-based objectives, writing facilitator/participant materials
Create engaging learning activities and compelling course content that enhances retention and transfer
Adhere to published development standards
Work with subject matter experts, stakeholders, and others to assure technical accuracy and sign-off
Conduct train-the-trainer
Participate in training pilots
Ensure that technical solutions function as designed with existing internal technologies when scaled for class implementation
Independently manage training related projects leveraging project management skills as follows: time estimates for deliverables; establishing and managing project schedules; communicating project status to project team and management; managing multiple assignments, and gaining alignment with customer
Evaluate training by communicating with audience, facilitators, managers, and learners to determine effectiveness of instruction; working with facilitators to obtain formal and informal class evaluation input.
Revise materials continually as content and approach changes dictate including performing in-depth needs analysis on course effectiveness
Maintain updated, efficient materials that engage and energize learners
Evaluate course documents and materials of other training staff for accuracy and adherence to standards
Create supporting material/media (audio, video, simulations, role-plays, games etc.)
Decide on the criteria used to judge learner's performance and develop assessment instruments
Maintain project documentation and course folders

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years professional experience in Instructional Design in a training related function
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a role largely focused on technical writing or course design/development required (eLearning design included)
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • In pursuit of or have completed a credentialed Instructional Designer degree (Instructional systems design degree, or similar education degree)
  • Experience developing training materials for other trainers in an area of business where they lack subject matter expertise
  • Knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models
  • Lesson and curriculum planning skills
  • Working knowledge of an industry standard authoring software for eLearning development (Examples: Articulate, Captivate, Storyline)
  • Strong communication and relationship skills with all levels of the business
  • Solid visual design skills (Photoshop, Illustrator) and ability to storyboard
  • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, and audio scripts/video scripts
