Job Description

The Director, Network Technology Business Management will own the business operations and financial management for the Visa networks, and will be responsible for providing the overall leadership for operating budgets, financial analysis, financial strategic planning, and business case development for Visa’s network investments. Additionally, the director will drive improved efficiency through investments in Visa's next-generation network capabilities to reduce costs, automate, and reduce lead times. Further, the director will serve vendor manager, ensuring optimal cost and performance from key network partners. This is a highly-visible role within Visa's Global Infrastructure Network Services team – the organization that is chartered to architect, plan, engineer, and operate Visa's global networks (wide-area networks, data center networks, corporate networks), supporting Visa's business and users worldwide (100B+ annual transactions).

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior technical and business leader to contribute to the delivery of Visa's vision for the transformation of the company's infrastructure toward next-generation capabilities, including software-defined networking, virtualization, and cloud technologies.

This position reports directly to the Senior Director, Head of Global Network Transformation, and is a key member of the Network leadership team. This position can be based in Ashburn (VA) or Denver (CO).

The successful candidate will provide end-to-end business and financial management through architecture, planning, engineering, and operations, supporting the execution of multiple initiatives to modernize and transform Visa's global networks, with a focus on delivering best-in-class security, availability & performance, as well as improved network automation and tools capabilities, increased operational efficiencies, and lower network unit costs, and will have responsibility across several key areas, including the following:

  • Lead the “business” of Visa’s networks with a keen technical, financial, and strategic understanding of the Visa network, infrastructure, technology, and business in order to identify, track, analyze, and forecast key operational and financial drivers of business results.
  • Serve as a key contributor to the technology decision-making process through a strong understanding of the technical and financial factors of network architectures, equipment (hardware and software), data services (circuits, managed networks, etc.) and network tools.
  • Manage the analysis and reporting of network financial results and forecasts as they relate to network metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs), including variances, trends, and potential risks and opportunities. 
  • Evaluate and enhance cost allocation and staffing practices to achieve improved quality, efficiency, and transparency, driving continuous improvement in the network workflow.
  • Provide technical and financial analysis of Visa’s network investments across data center and WAN, including capital investments for new projects and recurring expenses in support of ongoing operations.
  • Collaborate closely with network architecture, planning, engineering & operations teams to develop roadmaps and time-bound, metrics-driven execution plans and milestones, including the financial costs and expected benefits.
  • Lead the annual and quarterly financial budget roadmap process for Network.
  • Lead the business case development and management for all new strategic and tactical projects and programs for Network.
  • Lead vendor management function for key suppliers, driving performance against committed SLAs and Visa objectives, ensuring best cost, and collaborating with Global Sourcing to lead RFP initiatives.
  • Drive efficiencies for asset management, procurement, just-in-time inventory, reuse and disposal.
  • Lead a team (functional and/or matrix) of 3+ staff members that support over 200 staff across the Visa Network departments.
  • Build relationships and work with business partners and stakeholders within broader internal organizations to promote a unified approach to implementing our network transformation and strategic roadmap.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a senior technologist and financial manager with strong cross-functional leadership skills and substantial experience across network finance, architecture, planning, engineering and/or operations within a large/complex technology organization. The following qualifications are required for the role:

  • 10-12+ years of experience in a technology finance, architecture, planning, engineering, or operations capacity (or combination thereof) in a large-scale global technology infrastructure, 7+ of which is focused on network technology.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field OR business degree (MBA preferred) with relevant technical experience.
  • Demonstrated technical understanding of technologies, tools, and processes within the ecosystem of the network technologies, including (but not limited to) routing & switching, L4-7 traffic management (e.g. load balancing, DNS) and firewalls, across WAN, datacenter fabric and campus networks.
  • Strong understanding of the technical and financial factors of network architectures, equipment (hardware and software), data services (circuits, managed networks, etc.) and network tools.
  • Strong understanding of and experience with managing technology budgets, financial results and analysis, and business case development, including (but not limited to) the following: capital investments, depreciation and amortization, telco/data, support/maintenance, and staffing.
  • Prior experience in leading technical / technology business management teams and/or transformation programs related to networking technologies.
  • Strong track record in financial management of company-wide next-generation network technology initiatives.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals and latest innovations in Software Defined Networking (SDN) in the data center and/or WAN.
  • Experience leading technology RFPs valued at $10M+.
  • Demonstrated experience of metrics-driven technical / financial management with direct accountability
  • Excellent communicator and team-builder, capable of establishing trust and securing partnership with all levels of the organization, from engineers to senior executives.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with experience rationalizing large, disparate datasets into concrete observations/recommendations, and formalizing into new solutions.

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience leading a large Network Engineering and Operations team.
  • MBA or Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Program Management Professional (PgMP) certification.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
  • Experience in driving cultural transformation programs.
  • Advanced network technical certification (e.g., CCIE, JNCIE, etc.).
