Job Description

You may have noticed that payment has become a very popular area in the last several years. Given the strong demands and innovation, this will be a very exciting area in the next 5 to 10 years. VISA is clearly a very strong leader in the payment industry, and is in a fast pace of technology transformation. For a payment system to work well, advance technologies such as data platform, big data, data mining, business intelligence, machine learning, cloud, etc. are critical. In VISA, we have all of these. The Data Platform (DP) Department is in the center for many of these technologies and development.

The Data Platform is a key component of Visa's Technology organization that provides an enriched and valuable ecosystem of data platform and data services to drive innovation for our partners and clients, within Visa and globally. Data is the most valuable asset in Visa. The Data Platform is dedicated to systems and services to make data secure, high quality, rich, fast, and easy to use, therefore enabling Visa with the ability to leverage its data asset in an effective and timely manner to maximize technology/business development and differentiate Visa from others in the payment industry. The organization maintains tens of petabytes of data supporting over 100 services for various internal lines of business and external clients. Our technical stack has two layers: Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Data as a service (DaaS). The Infrastructure as Services team is part of Visa's Data Platform division. Our mission is to provide the enabling technology and processes to manage Visa data assets and deliver Value Added Information Products and Services to our customers. We are working very closely with PaaS team.

Data Platform organization is building the Next Generation Data processing engines with cost-effective and distributed applications on commodity hardware using best-in-class technology components. Building next generation applications require collaboration with exceptional group of highly skilled Data architects, software engineers, BI engineers, DevOps engineers, payment experts and infrastructure architects. This is an exciting time for a data professional to join our team to drive technology transformation.

A successful candidate needs to be technical, with architect experience, and have demonstrated ability to lead, recruit, grow and retain business intelligence and big data talent. Success in this role will requires working effectively with a matrix organization within Data Platform and across other departments within Visa. Prior experience must include leadership in engineering for mission-critical large scale data systems for analytic and operational use. Examples include business intelligence for large scale data lakes, warehousing, cloud technology like Hadoop and Spark, and predictive analytics.

We are looking for a director to lead a team of highly motivated and talented engineers maintaining complex BI Platform while transitioning the platform to modern big data technologies. This position offers you the opportunity to be at the center of innovation in the payments industry and unleash the power of data through building a big data solutions/services. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in business intelligence, cloud technologies, big data, web technologies, large scale distributed platforms etc., and is a thought leader, is very familiar with the up to date development of the industry in these areas, written and verbal communication skills, and software solution delivery.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Provide technology leadership in development of BI services by helping to drive technology decisions, project planning, estimation, budget, resource forecasting.    
  • Promote and inspire security, innovation, transparency, ownership, respect, and inclusion.     
  • Ensure stable, supportable, cost effective scalable and well performance of MicroStrategy and Tableau platforms servicing thousands of internal and external customers.
  • Tracking the development of the BI industry, select and recommend appropriate tools/systems for Visa to use
  • Work with BI tools/system vendors on problem diagnostics, bug fixes, and new feature development.
  • Partner with application developers, architects, engineers, and various groups supporting data initiatives.
  • Collaborate with project and development teams to ensure on time delivery of projects, production support plans, and knowledge transfer for long-term supportability of upgrades, enhancements, and deployments.
  • Identify existing and potential productivity issues and opportunities, develop methods and systems to improve these functions and manage their implementation.
  • Serve as liaison between the various organizational entities and building relationships with members of these organizations.
  • Work closely with data architects, application development to design and implement analytical BI applications using big data and data streaming open source technologies.
  • Identify opportunities for further enhancements and refinements to standards and processes.
  • Lead by example, mentor team members, develop departmental procedures and best practices standards.
  • Execute fiscal acumen, budget awareness, promote efficiency and solid decision judgement. 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years of software development management experience with a concentration in data centric initiatives
  • Proven ability to lead, recruit, grow and retain business intelligence and big data talent
  • BS / MS in Computer Science, or Information Systems or equivalent experience
  • Hands on experience with MicroStrategy and Tableau Server architecture.    
  • Have strong problem diagnostic and debugging skills
  • Possess superb business analytic ability and astute awareness of state-of-the-art and best practices for data analytics, knowledge management
  • Astute knowledge of technology components, such as Linux, Windows, TCP/IP, SSH,  TomCat,  virtualization,  SAN, NAS, http, GitHub, ForgeRock, firewalls, load balancer, java,    
  • Deep knowledge and hands on experience on Big Data and cloud computing technologies including Hadoop, Spark, Hive, HBase, etc.
  • Hands on DevOps and CICD lifecycle, previous/current coding experience
  • Agile development experience
  • RDBMs and SQL/NoSQL experience required.
  • Financial services and/or payments processing industry experience is a plus. 
  • Strong communication skills with proven ability to present complex ideas and document in a clear and concise way.
