What’s it all about?

Visa has an exciting opportunity for a Lawyer – Data Privacy to join a growing Data Privacy team in London, working as part of a global data privacy network and reporting directly to Visa’s European head of Data Privacy.  The purpose of the role is to be to be a subject matter expert (SME) for keeping up to date with both regional and global data-related regulation with a key focus on GDPR compliance; proactively logging all updates, reviewing and revising relevant policies and procedures, ensuring template material is updated where necessary and informing colleagues of the substantive changes.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for providing high quality data privacy and commercial compliance advice and support to Europe’s head of Data Privacy as well as colleagues at all levels within the business regarding data privacy legislation and innatives.

  • Responsible for management of day to day legal queries and business deals taking the lead on all relevant Data Privacy activities within identified client areas.

  • To work closely with the Regulatory team to develop appropriate positions in relation to new regulatory and legislative initiatives; particularly the GDPR.

  • Project work – advising on specific projects and assignments to ensure overall legal guidance is given to business within the Visa context, including ensuring others are involved where legal specialism is required.

  • Contract management: managing, negotiating, drafting, amending and advising on all contracts from a data privacy perspective. Working with Procurement and other departments to ensure contracts accurately reflect business needs and policies as they develop.

  • Manage identified areas of law and be a proactive subject matter expert in Data Privacy reviewing externally published materials to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and legislation.

  • Instructing, managing and developing relationships with external counsel, where required.

  • To ensure the company achieves its corporate scorecard objectives through provision of high quality legal advice to business and managing key objectives of the division scorecard.

  • Manage, develop and maintain relationships to facilitate effective delivery of legal advice and assistance.

  • To manage and advise on contract process solutions to ensure effective working procedures in accordance with audit and Visa’s policies.  To develop and train team member’s to be efficient and have the tools to carry out their role.

  • To provide training to identified business areas on law, processes and policies.

  • To support both senior and junior members of the team.

  • Proactively contribute to the Legal Division’s planning, cohesion, consistency in advice and the general efficiency and effectiveness of the department as a whole.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualified lawyer with previous experience in a legal environment.

  • Previous substantial and demonstrable Data Privacy subject matter expert experience.

  • Significant experience at law firm and in-house in required area of expertise.

  • Previous experience of working within a technology and digital legal environment preferred.

  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as on own initiative.

  • Superior time management, planning and organisational skills.

  • Proven stakeholder management skills.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven experience in relationship building and partnering.

  • Ability to motivate and influence others, irrespective of whether they be senior management or junior members of staff

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of payment card industry is preferable.
  • Previous experience of cross-border and multi-jurisdictional Data Privacy issues.
