Job Description

As Staff Systems Engineer, Network Tools, your primary responsibility will be to assist in designing, driving, and implementing improvements to Visa’s network management tools, with specific focus on broadening and deepening the capabilities for network monitoring, fault detection, and recovery. This will involve leveraging and expanding Visa’s existing toolsets, identifying gaps in coverage and capability, and working with team leads in developing solutions to create more specific, granular, and real-time network visibility. You will work closely with the Network Tools Development team on the design and implementation of new features, including triaging requirements, formalizing into recommendations, and designing and implementing solutions.   This position is within Global Infrastructure Network Services (GINS) team, that architects, engineers and operates Visa’s global backbone, datacenter, and access networks. The GINS team is centered around hiring and developing talents who are passionate about building and operating best-in-the-breed infrastructure through technology and innovation.

 

Specific areas of focus include:

  • Working with tools team technical leads to identify technological and operational gaps in the monitoring, diagnostics, and management infrastructure and implementing solutions to remediate
  • Enhancing capabilities to analyze device syslog data to identify issues proactively or reactively
  • Deepening network telemetry analysis by enabling new real-time data from network devices to capture spikes and telemetry data, and correlating with SNMP-based monitoring data
  • Broadening our packet and flow monitoring fabric and aggregating this data for new focused diagnostic and trouble-shooting capabilities
  • Expanding the use of artificially generated traffic to identify issues with network connectivity that are not caught by traditional monitoring mechanisms
  • Identifying common, repeatable troubleshooting and network recovery tasks, and building automation to manage these tasks
  • Developing self-service tools for application and infrastructure clients to gain better visibility of real-time network health and performance
  • Partnering with Network Architecture, Network Engineering, and Network Software Development to help build and delivery of next generation network tools and capabilities

Qualifications

As the ideal candidate, you will be a mid to senior level network technologist with technical experience in tools engineering and deployment. ​The following qualifications are required for the role: ​

  • 7+ years of experience in a technology capacity in network engineering and similar roles
  • Solid understanding and ability to optimize the platforms and technology used in monitoring networks, including but not limited to SNMP and syslog
  • Proven experience delivering engineering solutions for network monitoring and alarming tools, leveraging vendors such as Netcool, Nervecenter, Solarwinds, Netscout, Netbrain, and Thousandeyes
  • Understanding of LAN and WAN network technologies, like VXLAN, EVPN, CLOS architecture, Spanning tree etc.
  • Understanding of technologies like LTM, GTM, CDN used to deliver online services
  • Understanding of security services like FW, DDoS mitigation, WAF, Botnet prevention etc.
  • Experience implementing fault management solutions to increase operational uptime
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python
  • Experience with SQL queries
  • Excellent communicator and team-builder, capable of establishing trust and securing partnership with all levels of the organization, from engineers to senior executives.
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
  • Experience working in a large Software/Tools Development team or Network Engineering / Operations team.
  • Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Advanced network technical certification (e.g., CCNP, JNCP, etc.).
  • Certified Scrum Master (CSM).
