Company Description

We are recruiting for a fast growing nutrition company in Rwanda, operating the largest maize mill in the country with a production capacity of 43.200 MT per year. It produces flour (for consumers and institutions), maize grits (for the beer brewing industry) and bran as animal feed. The products are certified by the Rwanda Bureau of Standards. The company is also involved in agriculture. The company’s sister company is engaged in post-harvest processing: purchasing maize from local traders, drying and storing. Hence, the company and its associated companies cover the complete maize value chain in a technologically advanced and socially responsible way.

The ambition of the company is to further strengthen its position on the local and regional market as provider of high quality nutrition products, to expand the number of products and further penetrate the market in general and certain niche markets in particular.

The company is governed by a Board of Directors, consisting of 7 members, and a Management Team, consisting of a General Manager, a Director of Finance, a Head Miller and a Commercial Manager.

Job Description

The General Manager will be tasked to continue the growth of the company through a strong focus on product development, marketing, sales and distribution. The commencement date of the new General Manager will be early 2015, allowing for an overlap with the current General Manager of two months.

As the General Manager of the Company his/her specific responsibilities will consist of, but will not be limited to:

1.1.     ensuring the recruitment and retention of a skilled, effective management team;

1.2.     leading the development of effective, world-class management and operational systems and processes;

1.3.     providing leadership to the management team of the Company and ensure its effectiveness;

1.4.     facilitating internal reviews of the management team and performance of the various committees of the Company, whether or not he/she is a member;

1.5.     overseeing the induction of newly appointed senior managers reporting directly to him/her;

1.6.     ensuring and promoting harmonious relations within the management team and generally within the Company;

1.7.     jointly with the Board, developing the Company’s strategies and policies and monitoring their implementation, and every year, revisiting of the Business Plans of the Company and its subsidiaries and validating these with the respective Boards of the Company and its subsidiaries;

1.8.     giving the necessary directions and make the approvals, subject to sound judgement and reasonableness, required to enable the operations of the Company proceed seamlessly;

1.9.     ensuring and monitoring succession planning for key management roles within the Company;

1.10.   acting as the principal conduit for communication internally, - and together with the Chairman – externally, on all issues, including but not limited to, the Company’s policies, business strategy, planned acquisitions and corporate governance for the Company;

1.11.   ensuring harmonious and productive relationships within and without the organization; promoting mutual understanding and amicable conflict resolution;

1.12.   fostering a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices while building a pool of outstanding talent;

1.13.   doing all that is within his/her power to promote, develop, extend and grow the existing and generating new businesses of the Company, at all times using the knowledge, skills, experience and contacts and/or networks he/she possesses;

1.14.   leading, with the Chairman, the Board Committees that prepares decisions for recommendation to the Board;

1.15.   ensuring the financial statements, management reports and board papers are presented to the Board of Directors and Shareholders of the Company in a timely and accurate fashion;

1.16.   ensuring funds are made available to allow for the payment of operations and agreed investments;

1.17.   performing such other duties and obligations which the Company and/or the Board may from time to time properly assign to him/her in his/her capacity as General Manager in connection with the business of the Company; and

1.18.   abiding by, observing and at all times complying with and giving effect to the terms and conditions of the Investment Agreements and ensuring that the Company does not in any way violate or fail to comply with its obligations there under.

Qualifications

1.1.   General profile

1.1.1. The General Manager (GM) that we seek is expected to drive the performance of the company through a series of interventions aimed at expanding the revenue base. He must therefore bring in the proven practical experience and theoretical background for achieving growth in a nutrition business in Africa. The main driver of growth should be through own programs (organic), although we do not exclude growth through acquisitions.

1.1.2. With the company being one of the larger food processing companies in Rwanda, it receives a lot of attention from various Ministries (Ministry of Trade & Industry, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Health in particular). Hence the GM must excel at networking and building strong relationships at senior levels in the government and governmental institutions.

1.1.3. The General Manager should be strong in communication, interacting with key clients, guiding his small team, networking with governmental bodies (see above) and reporting to the (Chairman of the) Board of Directors and other stakeholders.

1.2.   Specific requirements

1.2.1. Having successfully led an agri-processing / nutrition company in (East) Africa

1.2.2. Having successfully implemented strategic plans, and met or exceeded annual budgets and key performance indicators on a consistent basis

1.2.3. Proven track record in revenue enhancement in FMCG environment

1.2.4. Proven leadership skills in the recruitment and motivation of a strong management team

1.2.5. Academic background (Business, Economics), preferably at Master level

1.2.6. Multi-lingual (English, French)

Additional Information

Compensation + bonus depending on skills and experience, plus housing, car, health insurance. 

The General Manager will be entitled to a performance based bonus to be determined by the Board of Directors of the company
