Job Description

MAJOR PURPOSE:

The Academic Advisor is responsible to provide quality, student-centered educational support that encourages and empowers students i) to make informed educational decisions ii) to progress academically and personally, iii) to develop successful educational and life skills iv) to set realistic goals that allow students to pursue their passions and to be employable. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Educational Support- 

a) Assists students, individually and in groups, with developing educational and career skills, goals, and plans.

b) Work with student throughout their entire educational admissions process and throughout enrollment.

c) Collaborate with professors and other professionals to assist students with their educational, career, and life planning.

d) Work with accounts manager to track and support internship process for each student.

 Student Success-

a) Monitor students’ attendance, and reach out to student--especially when concerns are noted by faculty--and facilitate appropriate interventions.

b) Implement effective referrals and follow-up process as needed.

c) Provide student orientation as needed to help students understand WJU process, online system, and other key items.

d) Continue to aid with using Moodle and other technology resources.

e) Attend appropriate conferences and professional development activities that will improve knowledge and skills. 

 Data Management –

a) Create and maintain individual student records, such as educational plan, financial aid, and referrals made.

b) Enter all information into appropriate databases as required by university policy and best practices of BAC.

 Event Coordination-

a) Assist Director with the following events focused on students:

i. Student appreciation week, student celebration dinner, new student orientation, and other student specific events.

Administration –

a) Participate in staff development, workshops, programs, and administrative functions; attends meetings, e.g., weekly team meetings.

b) Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor Degree and five years’ experience working with college students. Preferred: Graduate Degree and directly related academic advising and/or applicable teaching experience in a college setting. 

SKILLS/ABILITIES:


• Knowledge of University policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources, student life, and support services. 

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; teaching or public speaking experience preferred. 

• Ability to build good rapport with a variety of constituents. 

• Attention to detail and successful organizational skills. 

• Problem solving skills, dependable, cooperative, multi-tasking, responsible, and patient. 

• Computer proficiency and student integrated management system experience preferred. 

• Ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions. 

• Ability to maintain confidentiality. 

• Ability to work a flexible schedule—occasional weekends and evenings required. 

• Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including minority and international students.
