Job Description

Ancestry seeks to add a new position to its Government Affairs team focused on proactively developing and executing its State Government Affairs strategy.   The Director of Government Affairs will report to the Senior Director of Government Affairs and will be located either in Lehi, Utah or San Francisco, California. 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Government Affairs team to develop and execute the company’s State Government Affairs strategy
  • Gain an understanding of the business interests and goals in order to effectively drive the company’s state affairs strategic advocacy agenda
  • Represent and advance Ancestry’s state government affairs agenda before state lawmakers and other state government officials
  • Track and monitor state legislative initiatives important to the company, lead analysis of proposed legislative/regulatory actions, help determine the potential impact on the company and propose appropriate responses
  • Help draft policy recommendations, testimony and possibly testify on behalf of the company
  • Develop and foster strong working relationships with state lawmakers and government decision makers
  • Establish a positive, credible and influential presence for Ancestry with state focused trade associations, other relevant stakeholder organizations and ensure the company’s policy interests are well represented
  • Identify, hire and manage state focused contract lobbyists/consultants to ensure a positive outcome on our legislative/regulatory strategies
  • Actively participate in state legislative and other state government focused groups and proactively identify opportunities to raise the company’s profile through external engagement by participation in panel discussions and giving presentations on topics important to the company


  • Bachelor’s degree required; JD degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience including work in government and government relations or related positions in a corporation, trade organization or consulting/lobbying firm
  • Experience and success interacting with state lawmakers and government officials
  • Existing relationships with state lawmakers and government officials, their staffs and other state organizations is preferred
  • Ability to manage and leverage outside consulting and lobbying resources 
  • Extensive knowledge of the state government relations and legislative processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of data and genetic privacy laws and genetic testing laws is preferred
  • Ability to quickly understand all components of an issue, and effectively influence an outcome
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven ability to be a team player, network and build coalition support
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to formulate innovative solutions to complex problems and keep ahead of industry trends
  • Self-starter that proactively more initiatives forward
  • Adaptable, flexible, with the ability to lead and drive for results
  • Ability to work across political lines in a bipartisan manner
  • Ability to travel up to 40% of time
