HR: You Can’t Do Your Job Without Facebook

Are you tired of hearing about the social media networks and their importance to human resources? Well get over it. Social media is here to stay and the king of the hill right now is Facebook. Nearly a billion users all over the globe are registered and recently Facebook went public.  Right now it’s only 8 years old. There are 7 billion people in the world, and 900 million of them are on Facebook; that’s remarkable. Let’s think about that for a moment.

20 years ago, the Internet was gaining momentum and there were those people that said it was a fad. They said they there is no way consumers will purchase items and make financial transaction through a virtual market place. Fast forward to today and it’s literally impossible to have a successful business without a web presence. Customers will not take you seriously if you don’t have a website. There is a point where potential employees will not take you seriously as an employer if you are not on Facebook; in many ways, we are already there.

You may think that last statement is a stretch but remember society’s becoming more and more comfortable sharing information and making transactions over the Internet with social media. Employer branding focuses on two things, social media and word of mouth.  Facebook provides both. It’s a great way to monitor your brand and source for talent.

This “like us” strategy has filtered in the employee recruitment and engagement areas. Ever notice on those commercials how they ask you to “Like” us on Facebook for your chance to win a free Chimichanga?  The value of “Liking” a product on Facebook is about $8 per like, but it only costs about $1 to produce . And when a consumer “shares” a promotional or advertisement, that’s worth about $14 each. That’s a huge return on the investment.

Let’s go a little deeper, 8 years is roughly a generation. Soon we will have a nation of workers that cannot imagine a world without Facebook.  Even the kids graduating high school and college now-a-days are very social savvy networkers. When they enter the workplace they will look for work via Facebook.
