Location: México City  

Position Objective:

  • To contribute to the successful implementation of ELT Learning Solutions publishing plans by leading the content development and editorial project management of allocated publishing projects and components, working cooperatively in managing project schedules, budgets and editorial resources, conducting research, and commissioning components as required, to deliver the allocated publishing on schedule, within budget and to the appropriate quality.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Project initiation: In collaboration with the Senior Managing Editor and Sales Manager/Business Development Manager, help to initiate projects by contributing to the definition of detailed editorial scope and requirements, appropriate stakeholder analysis, budgeting for external resourcing, and risk planning, so that project planning takes account of all relevant factors; in this capacity, support the Senior Managing Editor and Sales Manager/Business Development Manager in the preparation of Approval documentation for presentation to the Approval Board.
  • Content development: In collaboration with the Senior Managing Editor and any other Managing Editors, act as Project Lead or Editorial Lead on allocated projects and/or components: Lead the editorial team in the development of course syllabus, scope and sequence, and content, creating clear and effective briefs for authors / writers on project(s) and liaising with them during content development, to ensure pedagogical effectiveness, market appropriateness, consistency, accuracy, legal acceptability, and appropriate realization of the agreed intent of the work.
  • Adaptation projects: In collaboration with the Senior Managing Editor, advise on content changes to meet the requirements of a specific client or market.
  • Project management: As required, in collaboration with the Senior Managing Editor, and any other Managing Editors, act either as Editorial Lead on allocated projects and/or components, or as Project Lead: 
  • As Editorial Lead: Set, plan, schedule, and monitor project timelines, milestones and deliverables using appropriate tools; prepare regular status reports highlighting progress and issues; and report routinely to the Project Lead and other key stakeholders on the overall progress of projects, to anticipate workflow and scheduling obstacles and to identify corrective actions to address issues and risks.
  • As Project Lead: Monitor project progress and ensure regular and effective communication and smooth working relationships between team members, between departments and between authors / writers and staff to ensure smooth running of projects. Report routinely to the Senior Managing Editor on the overall progress of the allocated projects.
  • In either capacity, collaborate with the Senior Managing Editor to promote best practice and efficiencies in project management.
  • Development management: As required, in collaboration with the Senior Managing Editor and any other Managing Editors, schedule and coordinate the work of authors / writers, in‐house and freelance editorial staff, and development houses / packagers, communicating expectations to team members and other stakeholders to ensure that content is delivered in a timely manner and to project specifications.
  • Co‐publications development management: Monitor co‐publisher adaptations to ensure these are completed to the required standard.
  • Budget management: Manage the budget for editorial work on allocated projects/components, ensuring project budget is adhered to, and so that any budget‐related risks are identified and mitigated in a timely way.
  • Research and commissioning: In collaboration with the Senior Managing Editor and any other Managing Editors as relevant, actively maintain familiarity with relevant target markets by liaising with relevant Sales Managers/Business Development Managers or clients to inform the development of allocated projects; identify appropriate authors / writers, negotiating contracts and commissioning authors for specific projects or components; and evaluate and develop proposals with authors / writers in consultation with external reviewers and in‐house colleagues, so that new publishing meets market and/or client needs.
  • Editing: Assume overall responsibility for the content and copy editing of allocated projects by briefing and supporting in‐house and/or freelancer staff and carrying out specific editing tasks as required, including: guiding the Editors in creating clear and effective briefs for authors / writers and external freelancers and liaising with them during content development; working with the Editorial team, authors / writers and external suppliers to help develop and shape prototype material for field testing and review; attending recordings and checking digital, audio and video materials; contributing to the selection of artists, and checking sketches and final art; and ensuring page proofs, art, photos, audio, video and digital materials are checked so that all content meets the required editorial standards.


Remuneration Package:   

  • Monthly Salary $ 50,000 - $ 60,000 MXN monthly
  • Christmas Bonus 1 month
  • Performance Bonus 8-10% of annual salary upon accomplishment of LAN and personal goals


Qualifications

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE 

Formation:  

  • BA (Graduate); CELTA / TESOL qualification or equivalent experience

Languages & Experience:

  • Bilingual - fluent in Spanish & English
  • +5 years in a position with similar responsibilities
  • Leadership of a team of up to 3 direct reports, although this role can operate without in‐house direct reports. Direct oversight of authors/writers. Direct and/or shared oversight of varying numbers of freelance members of project teams (can be 10 or more, especially when overseeing more than one project or component).
  • Strong ELT editorial content development skills, able to lead teams of editors to ensure products meet pedagogical aims and market needs
  • Strong editorial project planning and management skills with experience of a wide range of ELT products and workflows, able to plan projects that vary in complexity from 6 months' to 3 years' duration and ensuring the simultaneous publication of multiple components in multiple formats.
  • Experience of managing teams of people and of line managing individuals, with an ability to motivate teams over long projects
  • Strong communicator and active listener with very strong written and speaking skills, particularly in negotiating terms with, and managing the work of, authors and freelancers, and in discussing the specification for customized projects with clients
  • Agile and analytical thinker with the ability to both plan long‐term and adapt to changing circumstances and setbacks through creative problem‐solving
  • Strong team player and collaborator
  • Knowledge of best financial practices on both macro (list planning) and micro (project budgeting) levels
  • Good working knowledge of the capabilities and features of content databases, cloud‐based document‐sharing systems, project management software, and team productivity software, and sales performance and communication software (Cognos, SalesForce)
