Reference checks are completed towards the end of the recruiting process and in many cases job offers are contingent on a candidate successfully completing reference checks and a background check.

What kind of information can be released varies from company to company. Some might confirm dates of employment and the position held while others will disclose rehire eligibility – although that is not as common as it was 5-10 years ago.

Some organizations outsource reference checking to a 3rd party provider, while the most successful approach to checking references is to engage the entire hiring team in the reference process and split up the 3-5 references received, and have a planned approach to asking questions that matter and will give you valuable information and insights on the probability of success in your potential new hire.
