The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, an independent LORT theatre, is one of the nation’s largest classical theatres, serving over 100,000 children and adults annually.  It is New Jersey’s only professional arts institution dedicated exclusively to presenting Shakespeare’s canon and other classics through world class stage productions and high-impact education programs.  Six main stage productions plus an outdoor summer production are presented annually. Job Description

The Scenic Charge Artist works in conjunction with the Technical Director, and reports to the Director of Production. Duties for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Creating samples for approval by Scenic Designers, the Director of Production, and the Artistic Director
  • Mixing all color
  • Paint and surface treatment on all scenic elements
  • Carving or otherwise sculpting scenic elements such as stone, tree bark, etc.
  • All necessary surface texturing
  • Applying protective coatings where necessary
  • Supervising additional staff of professionals and interns,
  • Maintaining the safety, order, and cleanliness of all paint areas
  • Maintaining all paint equipment
  • Instructing stage management and running crew in the proper care and maintenance of finished surfaces.
  • Creating a touchup kit for use during the run of the show
  • Attending all production meetings

Qualifications

Applicants must have an extensive knowledge of scenic painting techniques and surface treatments including carving, texturing, ageing, and distressing. Ideal candidate is a self-motivated, safety conscious, team player with at least 2 years relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Information

Position is full-time, seasonal, with the possibility of becoming year-round. Candidate must be willing to work some nights and evenings. Future design opportunities are possible for qualified candidates.
