The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, an independent LORT theatre, is one of the nation’s largest classical theatres, serving over 100,000 children and adults annually. It is New Jersey’s only professional arts institution dedicated exclusively to presenting Shakespeare’s canon and other classics through world class stage productions and high-impact education programs. Six main stage productions plus an outdoor summer production are presented annually. The Theatre is strongly committed both to enriching public education through the art of classic theatre, and to supporting a high level of artistic excellence by training and nurturing new generations of classical theatre artists.

The position of First Hand Stitcher reports to the Draper and Costume Shop Supervisor. Responsibilities include:

• Supervising additional shop staff
• Assisting with organization and maintenance of costume shop supplies and equipment
• Assisting in training and supervision of over-hire, stitchers, interns, and volunteers
• Constructing and altering costumes
• Assisting with fittings as needed
• Millinery skills a plus

Position is seasonal, and runs from now until December.

Ideal candidate is organized and self-motivated with a degree in Costume Production or Technical Theatre and at least 2 years professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be skilled in costume construction including: cutting, stitching, dyeing, crafts, draping, and pattern making. Must have experience using industrial sewing machines.
