Company Description

The Star Tribune Media Company is the upper Midwest’s largest source of news and information, delivering more of what matters to Minnesota all day, every day.  In the 16th-largest U.S. market Star Tribune reaches more consumers than any other media brand, with the country’s 5th-largest Sunday newspaper, the most-visited local website, numerous mobile and tablet apps, and a portfolio of print and digital products. In 2013 the company was recognized with two Pulitzer Prizes as well as the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce “Best in Business” award.

Job Description

We are seeking to add a talented visual journalist to our design team. This person will be expected to design pages across several sections, including News, Business, Sports and Science & Health. She or he will work closely with design leaders, section editors and team leaders to produce newsy, dynamic and compelling pages. This person must excel at seeing new, accessible ways to present information and tell stories, and should embrace working in an environment in which rigorous editing for visuals and content is the norm. He or she must be able to design with flair but also serious journalistic purpose. This designer must adapt to the ebb and flow of the news. She or he must be nimble enough to design high-profile pages as well as crank out detailed inside pages. This creative person should bring new ideas to our team and help us develop new ways to hook readers.

It's a great time to be part of our team. We’ve recently relocated to a state-of-the-art facility and we took home 43 awards and a Top 10 finish in the Society for News Design’s most recent Best of News Design competition. We're growing and constantly looking for ways to tell great stories.

The Twin Cities annually rank among the most livable places in the nation (http://livability.com/top-10/health/top-10-healthiest-cities/2015/minnesota/minneapolis). We’re home to thriving arts and cultural institutions, beautiful outdoors attractions, a rising culinary reputation and vibrant, diverse communities. Minnesota is also an emerging hot bed for breweries. And we love a good microbrew. Four major professional sports franchises are represented here, and a fifth arrives in 2018 with MLS expansion team Minnesota United FC. A new billion-dollar Vikings stadium debuts in 2016 and huge sporting events are on the way: the Ryder Cup (2016), Super Bowl LII (2018), the Final Four (2019). Our market also ranks first nationally in several other areas, including newspaper readership, voter turnout, giving for the arts, volunteerism, and Fortune 500 companies per capita.

Qualifications

Proven visual communication and collaboration skills are all a must. The ideal candidate will be striving to master page design, typography and the layering of information to attract readers of various interest levels. She or he will work well with picture editors and content editors to find a perfect marriage of visuals and words for our news, sports and business sections. We use InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator regularly at the Star Tribune, and fluency in those applications is preferred.
