Job Description

The Star Tribune newsroom web team is looking for an outstanding designer with UX expertise, a thorough understanding of modern web development and a general interest in news and our community.

The ability to conceptualize content and articulate it to stakeholders is essential, as is a portfolio that demonstrates a design aesthetic that is clean, modern and efficient. This person must excel at seeing accessible ways to present information and tell stories, and should embrace working in an environment in which rigorous editing for visuals and content is the norm. We place a premium on collaboration and creativity, and must have a person in this role who would thrive in that environment and help evangelize it. No challenge should be too big or too small.

Qualifications

Ideally, this person would possess many of the following skills and abilities:

* A strong understanding of how visual design can influence the user's understanding of a story. This experience would be demonstrated front and center in your portfolio.

* A keen eye for spotting static print stories and assets that are crying out for a more imaginative rebirth in the digital space, making for engaging and fully immersive storytelling experiences.

* A strong understanding of UX best practices, gleaned from significant experience in the development and implementation of website and app user interfaces. UX experience across both desktop and mobile spaces is particularly attractive.

* A strong desire to leverage motion and animation tools (such as After Effects, Hype, Adobe Edge Animate or JavaScript) to create elements of surprise in our digital packages.

* Writes modern, standards-based markup.

* A complete understanding of CSS and a working knowledge of SASS.

* Basic understanding of JavaScript and an ability to identify, source and implement jQuery plug-ins.

* Familiarity with templating languages like PHP and twig.

* An ability to create mockups and prototypes that can easily convey ideas to stakeholders, editors, reporters or project managers.

* An ability to manage relationships with editors, reporters and developers. Must be motivated to advocate strongly for the user but be flexible enough to adjust plans as requirements change.

It's a great time to be part of our team. We've recently moved to a state-of-the-art newsroom, and we took home 43 awards and a Top 10 finish in the Society for News Design's most recent Best of News Design competition. We're growing and constantly looking for ways to tell great stories.

The Twin Cities annually rank among the most livable places in the nation (http://livability.com/top-10/health/top-10-healthiest-cities/2015/minnesota/minneapolis). We're home to thriving arts and cultural institutions, beautiful outdoors attractions, a rising culinary reputation and vibrant, diverse communities. Minnesota is also an emerging hot bed for breweries. And we love a good microbrew. Four major professional sports franchises are represented here, and a fifth arrives in 2018 with MLS expansion team Minnesota United FC. A new billion-dollar Vikings stadium debuts in 2016 and huge sporting events are on the way: the Ryder Cup (2016), Super Bowl LII (2018) and the Final Four (2019). Our market also ranks first nationally in several other areas, including newspaper readership, voter turnout, giving for the arts, volunteerism, and Fortune 500 companies per capita.
