  • Intern

Company Description

Star Tribune is the Upper Midwest’s largest integrated media company, defining and reaching audiences in Minnesota and around the world.

With the region’s most-visited website, one of the largest-circulation newspapers in the country, a range of digital and home-delivered advertising solutions, and numerous mobile and tablet apps, we touch more consumers than any other Minnesota media brand.

Job Description

The Star Tribune offers a 10-week summer photography and video internship. We recruit nationally for this program and pride ourselves on choosing talented, driven college and graduate students who can cover breaking news, as well as enterprise stories. Our summer interns are paid the same as first-year professionals, $720 a week.

We expect our interns:
•    to develop their own story ideas and to run hard at the assignments we give them
•    to have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
•    to conduct themselves in a professional manner
•    to have at least one professional grade DSLR camera body, plus lenses

We provide:
•    a real-world experience in a major daily newsroom
•    a challenging and affirming environment that includes mentors as well as supervisors
•    weekly brown-bag lunch discussions on topics such as investigative reporting, narrative writing and multimedia storytelling

Our newsroom requires visual journalists with more than one special area of expertise.  The Star Tribune seeks a creative and energetic multimedia photojournalist intern who can handle assignments both for still photography and for video storytelling.

All candidates must have photographic/video skills to cover a wide variety of events, and a demonstrated interest in creating innovative content that adds a dimension beyond the daily report for the paper, website and other platforms.

We expect a familiarity with all forms of social media for newsgathering and distribution.
The successful candidate’s portfolio will demonstrate a solid foundation for still photography and video storytelling covering news, business, sports, features and an interest in projects.

Qualifications

Candidates for the position should show a strong, developing visual sense for still photography.
They should have experience shooting video with a DSLR and dealing with lighting, as well as a dedicated video camera and video editing skills. Knowledge of audio production is an advantage.
Candidates for the position should also have knowledge of Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, and audio editing software. Familiarity with HTML and a solid understanding of video encoding techniques are a bonus.

Most successful applicants have completed their junior or senior year of college, worked for a college news outlet AND interned with at least one other professional daily news organization.  The odds of your landing one of our internships are better if you’ve interned at a professional newspaper, news magazine or website. We’re looking for budding journalists who have demonstrated they’re ready to make the most of this opportunity.

Your application, which must be uploaded or postmarked by Nov. 15, 2015, should include:
•    A cover letter explaining why you want to be a journalist and what skills you’d bring to the position
•    A portfolio of your best work, including pieces that demonstrate your ability to produce clear, compelling stories on deadline
•    A resume detailing your journalism experience and three references, including their titles, phone numbers and email addresses
•    Two letters of recommendation. At least one of those letters should come from an editor who has seen you work in a professional environment on deadline. Do not submit letters of reference from fellow student journalists.
•    Your references can email letters of recommendation to newsrecruiter[at]startribune.com with your name in the subject line, or mail to Colleen Stoxen, Star Tribune Deputy Managing Editor, 650 3rd Ave. S., Suite 1300, Minneapolis, MN 55488. Please ask references to write your name on the envelope.
