Job Description

The Investment Portfolio Structure Research Project aims to gather information about the current structure and performance of the Investment Portfolio, and to examine possibilities to improve the Investment Portfolio to be more in line with the mandates of the SSMU.

The goals of the Investment Portfolio Structure Research Project are to:

i. Examine the historical returns on the Investment Portfolio compared to the market returns, and to analyze how the portfolio has been performing in recent years.

ii. Examine the purpose of the Investment Portfolio and the degree to which the current portfolio is fulfilling its purpose.

iii. Examine the relevancy of the Investment Portfolio to the Society’s mission.

iv. Examine the level of student involvement in the management of the investment portfolio, including comparison to other Student Societies and Student Groups.

v. Examine the purpose of the Financial Ethics Research Committee (FERC) with respect to the investment portfolio, and make recommendations to improve the ability of the FERC to fulfill its mandate.

vi. Examine alternatives to the current structure and management of the investment portfolio, including an examination of the feasibility of these alternatives.

vii. Prepare a series of recommendations for the SSMU to implement in order to improve the way that the SSMU manages the investment portfolio, and to improve the level of student involvement in the investment portfolio.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working with the Vice-President (Finance & Operations), the Investment Portfolio Structure Researcher is responsible for examining the SSMU’s Investment Portfolio and the investment portfolios of similar student societies. The researcher will:

1. Compile both qualitative and quantitative data;

2. Identify issues with the current structure of the investment portfolio and prepare recommendations for improvement;

3. Report weekly to the Vice-President (Finance & Operations);

4. Report to the SSMU Legislative Council, Board of Directors, or Executive Committee (if required);

5. Prepare a final report which outlines the aforementioned goals of the research project.

Qualifications

1. Experience in Research;

2. Experience in Data Analysis;

3. Integrity, good planning skills, interpersonal skills, high degree of organizational skills;

4. Good communication skills;

5. Policy writing experiences an asset;

6. Good knowledge of the internal structure of the SSMU an asset.

Additional Information

• Paid position: $11.86 per hour

• Total of 50 Hours of work with possibility for extension

• Contract: Starts ASAP and will take approximately 2 months
