The SSMU Daycare Centre is a privately run, non-profit organization subsidized by the Québec Government and partly funded by McGill University undergraduate student fees who are given first priority for a place. Independent corporation, the SSMU daycare Centre is located downtown Montreal on the McGill campus.

Job Description

Relevant du Directeur Général de l'AÉUM,  le/la Directeur/trice du Centre de garderie de l'AÉUM est responsable de l'administration, du développement et du maintien des opérations, des services et des programmes du Centre.

Reporting to the SSMU General Manager, the Daycare Director is responsible for developing and maintaining the operation, services and programs of the SSMU Daycare Centre.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure the smooth and timely completion of daily operations and tasks.
  • Respond to demands from various parties including children, parents, educators, volunteers, government agencies, and the administration.
  • Up to date and current knowledge on all rules and regulations respecting childcare centres.
  • Oversee and implement the Centre’s communication strategy. Communication is both with internal and external stakeholders, and includes website and email updates, and internal information documents. All documentation must be made available in both official languages.
  • Responsible for the drafting of contracts in a timely manner, while keeping in mind the daycare’s mandate and waiting lists.
  • Ensure the highest enrolment possible at all times.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all children’s files are accurate and up to date and meet government regulations.
  • Track the daily attendance of children and provide this information, along with other requested documents to the Centre’s external auditor at the end of each fiscal year.
  • Create and maintain an annual budget and see that it is approved and reviewed by the General Manager and Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for completing the accounting tasks of the Daycare such as; payroll, invoices, benefits, accounts payable, monthly procedures, etc.
  • Oversee the purchase of all materials and supplies related to the daily operation of the Centre, as well as get approval for expenditures from the SSMU General Manager when necessary.
  • Prepare for, and attend Board meetings.
  • Responsible for the Centre’s employee supervision. This includes recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of all Centre personnel. Ensure that employee files are kept confidential, up to date and that all government regulations regarding training, certification, and educator: child ratios are respected.
  • Schedule weekly meetings with the daycare staff to improve the efficiency of the team.
  • Responsible for approving and/or processing payroll, as well as administrating the group benefits.
  • Responsible for the annual audit and must work in conjunction with the SSMU Accounting and Human Resources departments to produce all financials.
  • Responsible for developing and facilitating, in collaboration with the Centre’s educators and members of the Parents Committee, appropriate educational activities and outings.
  • Select and oversee a catering service and approve the monthly menu to ensure that it conforms to established government guidelines.
  • Follow McGill University building regulations, as well as municipal and Daycare by-laws.
  • Handle all union matters in coordination with Human Resources in a timely manner.
  • Other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of managerial experience combined with experience in a daycare setting an asset.
  • Bachelors’ degree in a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of daycare government regulations.
  • A minimum of 3 years of accounting knowledge related to daycare
  • Ability to use computers, word processing, Excel and data base knowledge and knowledge of Le Gestionnaire.
  • Strong leadership, supervisory and customer service skills and ability to create/maintain partnerships with families and staff.
  • Excellent communication skills both in English and French required.
