Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Deputy Electoral Officer (hereinafter “DEO”) shall supervise all electoral officers of the SSMU, oversee the operations of Elections SSMU, and be responsible for administering the SSMU’s elections and referenda, under the direction of the Chief Electoral Officer (hereinafter “CEO”).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Collaborate with electoral officers of the Students' Society of McGill University, oversee the
operations of Elections SSMU and be responsible for administering the Society's elections and referenda;
2. Responsible for the general conduct and execution of elections and referenda and shall fulfill these duties with all due diligence and impartiality;
3. Work alongside the CEO to advertise and promote voting at SSMU;
4. Act impartially for the agency;
5. Shall assume all duties of the CEO in the event of an extended absence of the CEO.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  1. To undertake other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned the Governance Manager, or as required by the SSMU Governance Documents.

SUPERVISION REQUIRED:
The DEO receives general direction from the Governance Manager.

Qualifications

 

  1. Diligence and impartiality in execution of duties.
  2. Knowledge of instant-runoff voting and other forms of voting.
  3. Ability to work well under pressure.
  4. Highly organized and strong attention to detail;
  5. Strong communication skills both in English and French is required;
  6. No officer of Elections SSMU may be:
  • a member of the Legislative Council, the Board of Directors, an Officer, a member of the Judicial Board, or a member of the Senate Caucus;
  • a former member of the Legislative Council or the Board of Directors, or a former Officer;
  • a councillor or executive of a Student Association;
  • a member of Society Staff in any other capacity;
  • a member of the editorial staff of any campus media; or 
  • a candidate or member of a campaign committee.

  • Paid position: $15.70 per hour
  • Hours: 150 total, 5 hours per week
  • Contract duration: July 15th, 2023 to May 31st, 2024
